anyone using the APS inlet? Or other inlets? Concerned my factory LGT may may collapse at ~350WHP Are the Gimmick Motorsports inlets rubbish? I know they have a new revision but that tells me the first one was released half-baked. Also, I think my factory LGT air box is good to ~350WHP, but I will be over that on E85. KStech is the one many LGT owners are using, anyone using KStech?
The new GMS inlet should be fine. They are wire reinforced which means they shouldn't collapse. If you feel like taking your IM off again, I would skip all of the silicone inlets and just get the APS unit. I am pretty certain any 08+ WRX/STI intake will work on your car. Well at least the few I test fitted seemed to have fit fine.
[rant on] uh yeah. I just bought a stock location turbo VF40/68HTA with 8cm hotside and already have a decent Perrin TMIC. I will have plenty of fuel to run E85. Rotated is not going to happen on this car anytime soon. If and when my rails ever show up, perhaps we will see rotated is not the only way to big power. Plus I am cautiously optimistic I will also have more area under the curve with a stock location setup than a comparable rotated 30R. Sure the 30R will make more PEAK HP, but will it be more enjoyable as a daily driver??? There are plenty of well-tuned VF39 STIs with huge TQ available at 2800 rpm. A 30R is getting walked by the VF39 stoplight to stoplight unless there is a bunch of drama and you launch at 4K rpm (read as hey mr policeman- look at me). yeah, yeah I know all about downshift and you're in the powerband again. If everyone realy believed that we'd all be driving S2000's or Hayabusa swapped Fiestas. My opinion is if you are spend $10-$15K to get 400whp you SHOULDN'T have to downshift. Some of the twinscroll setups do better of course, but now more money. I will swap in an LSx and go RWD before I go rotated. [Rant off]
[Rant On] Ill have to disagree with you on just about everything you said... Here is a graph of a Stage II 08 STI vs Dougs car with a GT35R kit on it. (note this is Dougs car before the built motor or cams) Now its no secret that I like rotated turbos. But you can't tell me you wouldn't give up that little bit of gain before 4k to get the gains after. Mind you this is a 35R so it spools even later than what a properly setup 30R does. With a 30R and Proper AVCS tuning the gains prior to 3500rpms aren't even worth mentioning. Also to say that its a better daily is all opinion, I wouldn't say that its a better daily in any way. I actually much prefered my 30R to my stock turbo even around town. Unless you are rolling away from a redling at 1200 rpms then the VF turbo car isn't going to beat the 30R car anywhere. [Rant Off]
Tend to agree. Sonny's car and Amonsta's car with a Borg Warner S256 (red close to 30R sized) are a TON of fun to drive on the street and those are both on stock motors (one with 185,000 miles on it now!!!). Sure peak torque comes in 500 rpms later, but you will never miss it. Adjust where you launch by 500 rpms and you should beat any comparable weight car. Now, I am not saying that your car will not be fun with the stock location turbo, just that the rotated turbos definitely have more end potential and will have much more area under the curve above 3500-4000 rpms. Heck, Ben's car was making 12psi at a stop with launch control on a 35R sized turbo!!
Ok I am probably off base on a 30R size as spool would be more similar. But on the dyno chart supplied the GT35 is making LESS TQ and LESS HP until ~ 4100-4200 rpm, so unless you are launching at >4100 RPM you are making LESS power at launch. The area under the curve is probably not equal until ~5500 RPM. Higher rev limits would obviously skew the power differential to the big rotated setup. So if the breakeven point for greater power is ~5500rpm, I need to ask myself how much time I spend winding my motor up to 7K+ to get the benefit of that powerband. I honestly do not rev my motor over 5500 rpm maybe 3-4 times per day. The 45 minutes I spend on I-285 each day would be LESS fun for me if i have to downshift to get equivalent output below 4100 rpm. I do understand what everyone is saying on this board about potential of a larger rotated setup. Maybe I have different goals than many people on the board as I have no intention of tracking the car, so my perspective on what makes a desirable daily driver may not match your viewpoint. Shoulda bought a E55 wagon. LOL.
lol, have you ever launched a car? My car launched from first gear at 23psi and took off faster than anything you could imagine, 0-60 in less than 3 seconds. On the road it was a beast, even if it was to only pass someone in 6th gear at 2500 RPM. I understand you're against the norm and 'trying' to make big power w/ a VF stock location turbo, and I wish you the best of luck, but if you're thinking it'll be more fun to drive than a 4-450 whp rotated setup b/c of 500 rpms in spool difference, let's just say I would disagree. My car, in any gear, pulled harder and stronger than ANY stock location turbo car I've ever ridden in, and the difference is it pulls all they way to redline, not just to 5000 RPM. If you think i'm wrong, look at that graph Ball posted again...the rotated kit peaks at the top, the stock location is DEAD after 5k.
You folks kill me... actually both my cars are automatics because I can't drive stick. yes I'm kidding. My wife probably rev matches downshifts better than 1/2 the "racers" on this board. Yes I have launched both my 2002 WRX and the Legacy GT, but never a sidestep. Shit the WRX is basically stock so it's a torqueless wonder, it does not leave a light worth a crap unless you slip it at no less than 3500 or so. I really do get it about rotated setups, but why the fuck does anybody need more than 400 WHP on the street. Seriously? Small penis much? LOL. The Legacy in old trim was 290WHP and it would get you in a heap of trouble very quickly. I must be one of the only people who honestly thinks ~300WHP is really enough. I went with a 68HTA hybrid because it was the same price as a VF52 but with a better MHI CHRA. I will be happy with 325WHP even though it will probably make a bit more. And yes my wife may need a limp map more than I do. Don't make any foolish driving maneuvers near a native New Jerseyian mommy; you are already trumped and will lose. Even Chuck Norris could only hope for a tie with my wife when she's been aggravated by someone clowning on the highway.
my old wrx has ~150,000 miles on a hybrid motor with vf39 making 290/340. i would be happy to daily drive it anywhere any time. granted, i wanted it faster. but it was enough to satisfy me daily.
Its your car, do what you want with it. I *think* you have some suggesting rotated simply because they're trying to save you money in the long run. But hey, it's your car (or your wife's in this case), your budget and you're the one who's driving it -- do you what you want. I would second Eddie's opinion of the hard APS instead of the Gimmick.
