If the local cities keep on fighting over who owes how much, and don't get their act straight by the end of the year....they can kiss the permit to used radar and laser speed detection devices. Would be epic, but i doubt it will happen. Either they are doing to get really strict till Dec and hand out as many citations they can before they loose the permits or finally get their act straight. http://www.wsbtv.com/news/25098872/detail.html
"But residents should remember, police can still use radar now, the state patrol will not be affected and police said they were catching speeders long before they had radar and they can do it again." Lol. What a way to try and scare people. The only thing with that is that they won't have hard evidence in how fast you were going. Lulz.
They don't need evidence, now. IIRC, some dumbass judge passed a ruling saying that because it's their profession, cops can now hand out tickets based on 'estimated' speeds, with these estimates coming from the officers themselves.
They can still prove it. I'm driving 55 mph and you are steady walking away from me = you speeding if limit is 55 mph. That's how they did it in the old days.
Yep, pacing. But last I knew, legally, they had to pace you for a full mile. This info was given to me by a Cobb Co. officer.
Nope, that is not what drew is talking about. Pacing is entirely different. There was a ruling that a police officer on the side of the road can estimate your speed and write you a ticket based on that estimation.
I've always noticed the white lines perpendicular to the road on the side of the highway since I've been down here. In Ohio, they use these with planes to clock cars from the air. Some of the people I've asked down here if they use planes just look at me like I'm retarded. I remember my Uncle who flies small planes asking one of the sheriffs up there how slow they can fly, and it was something like 50-60mph. All it takes is a stop watch and a known distance. edit: brings back memories of going out on a lone highway and having to look around at the sky before you wanted to do anything
http://www.dispatch.com/live/conten.../ohio-supreme-court-speed-estimate-valid.html that should end any confusion
Yes, true. I got pulled over last year for something like that at Beaver Ruin. Passed a cop by just a little bit and he decided to pull me over. Luckily he gave me just a warning.
Its my understanding that they're failing because they did not correctly deploy their service distribution. Which I understand is how the Departments (Fire, Police, etc) optimize themselves in the various areas of the County. They were given an extension to get their ducks in a row, so to speak, or they will lose their certification to shoot radar. I really do not see how they county's legal defense will let this happen. But I do really like the quote from one of their reps, saying something along the lines of, "We cannot lose our ability to use Radar for two reasons: revenue generation and safety." I lol'd at the fact that revenue generation came before our supposed safety.
Oh. Well in that case ANY car with exhaust that revs up or gets on the gas in any amount to get up to speed or whatever is speeding :|
a lot of those lines down here aren't for timing, though they very well could be. I believe they have something to do w/ entrance / exit ramps or something of the sort, but i'm not 100% sure.
Dunno in GA but in Fl those lines are for aircraft. On i-95 entering FL there's a sign stating speed checked by air and such.
this is similar to the argument over the use of red light cameras. which in savannah, were eventually torn down. except for a slightly different reason. (the city didnt pay the company who put them up, so they repossessed them). that and i'm pretty sure they haven't been able to afford to keep them all up and running. so of the original 10 planned i believe 1 is still used. also in south carolina it was argued that speed cameras( and the state simply mailing you a ticket, because of a clause in the law that said a ticket had to be issued by an officer) were illegal and for a while they had officers sitting next to them to justify the use. now they just have a cop designated to strictly writing tickets for traffic cameras, i.e. watching them all day and physically writing them.
lmao, they had a speed camera in Cincinatti. Big fuss, there was an officer present. The whole rig was like 30ft tall. Covered from top to bottom in bright flashing lights, Reflective police tape, and warnings. I remembered seeing it, laughing out loud literally and slowing down to the speed limit.....and watching hordes of people fly by me...I believe there was even an article stating the insane amounts of revenue is was pulling in.
well thats just the thing. you don't get that. you still get a ticket in the mail for speeding on the interstate. just instead of it being computer generated, its hand written just as if you'd been pulled over.
Pacing is 100% still legal. The legal guideline we were given when I was on patrol was 3/10ths of a mile minimum. Visual estimation is legal for those certified to use ladar and radar. The radar or ladar only confirm the speed that you visually estimate. The ladar or radar is not what is giving the speed, only "confirming" your visual estimation. You would be surprised at how accurate the human eye can be. My understanding is that they way they got around the "face your accuser" thing was they made it a "civil" ticket and not criminal. No points to the license, etc. Same thing they did with the red light cameras. Just thought I would explain a few things from a former cops experience.
My one and only speeding ticket came from this method on I-16E. Tailed me without even knowing it. Sneaky....
Interesting part is that with radar local police (read not state troopers) have to allow 9 mph over unless it is a school zone or a 25 mph residential zone. But with pacing they can technically pull you over for 1 mph over the speed limit.
Fuck cops, I hate 99% of them after my personal experiences, I know there are good ones out there that do there jobs and protect us all but the ones I encountered have all been annoying and pressing for an unjustified charge. Just my personal experience, the last one cost me a lot of money for his personal reasons
I usually stick with driving not faster than 14mph the limit. No point for tickects goint no faster than 14mph than the speed limit & doesn't go to insurance either. I have gotten tagged by laster at exacly 14mph over few times and nothing happened. I also do flow of the traffic, stay in 1 lane so i don't stick out when speeding, slow down around curves & under passes that i can't see beyond 1/4 of a mile. When i do haul like my butts on fire, I do so in the far right lane. At night watch for brake lights ahead, people even doing speed limit tap brakes when they see a cop lol.
I am sorry to hear about your experiences. 5% of cops ruin the image for the other 95% that are out doing their jobs. I know, as that is why I quit being a police officer. I tried to turn in that 5% and it got covered up. But honestly there are a lot of good ones out there. I worked with a good bunch of guys that were there to prevent REAL crime and go home to their families at night.
sad to say, but it's guilty by association. props to you for trying to fix things, but when the majority stay silent and cover everyone's asses they are just as guilty in my book. the thing that really irks me is that as a private citizen I have virtually zero recourse in any police encounters.
this and I agree....the ONLY ticket i've ever gotten was on a 45 and i was doing 60 (switched from 55 to 45 100yds before where i got popped) and it was 4:45am, not a soul on the road, and i was completely sober and he tried nothing but to force some sort of ticket on me. The deuche made me skip a day of work to get it dropped 1 mph so it wouldn't go on my record...even the judge laughed at the officer. I'm sorry, but while i may not make an ass of myself, i show NO ONE respect unless it is given in return...the last cop that pulled me over, I rolled the windows up on him and made him talk through an 1/2" gap...and he still had to let me go because it was bullshit while i agree there may be good ones out there, yhou can't trust a single one of them because 'everything you say may be held against you in a court of law' Fuck the police...do your jobs and catch the real criminals...oh wait, taht's more dangerous than chillin at the dunkin donuts
the sad part is that it wasn't always this way. talking to folks older than myself (grandparents and the like) and most everyone had a friendly relationship with the cops I believe a lot of it is the constant drive to continually have improving numbers. trying to quantify crime and constantly trying to improve the numbers to show a reduction in crime is a dangerous and slippery slope. http://www.villagevoice.com/2010-05-04/news/the-nypd-tapes-inside-bed-stuy-s-81st-precinct/ I can't help but believe that kind of thing is wide spread.
