Don't even waste your money on them. A few people have had the struts/shocks tested and found the valve dampening rates to be inconsistent between all four. If you're looking to stay cheap, go with at least BC's.

My car doesn't see the track, and doesn't see a lot of agressive driving....so I don't need anything thats designed for track use. I have over 300K miles on my current OE suspension.....its so worn out that my wheels rub the fenders when I corner hard enough....as well a few of the mounts are bad. So mounts / struts / and springs all the way around will cost more then a coilover set lol

This will be my first venture into the aftermarket suspension world.....so please excuse my noob questions lol.

what kind of problems do you think i would run into with the cheaper coil over sets?

swift springs on your choice of KYB, Koni, or Tokico struts and be done with it.

I will try to find the links for you after the Super Bowl.

You ask what is the negative side to cheap kits? Well, quality for one and IMO, that then translate into a safety concern. Save yourself the headache, be patient and consider looking at a used set of quality coilovers on here and the other boards. May take some time but if you've already gone 300k miles on the stock stuff, a month or two extra isn't going to hurt.

yeah but well spent, don't half ass it as it usually ends up costing more. Like when the shaft breaks on the cheap set of coil-overs and you go careening off into the three opposite lanes, or worse.

If you take a look in my signature pic, the front tire was actually scrubbing the fender when that pic was taken....My stock stuff is worn out....to the point where its not really safe lol

I need to do something.....Coilovers or strut / spring combo.....it really doesn't matter but I don't have tons of money to throw down towards suspension. If I had that kind of money, I would be driving an STI, not an old BD Legacy lol

I think if you're on a sort of tight budget and need to do something quickly, I think a springs/strut combo is most cost effective, considering your car doesn't see any track time.
Decent coil overs are really expensive, and just a spring/strut combo is a lot cheaper than coilovers.

What has me looking at coilovers is that I'm finding some sets in the $400 - $500 price range. I priced struts, springs, and mounts at Advance and was looking at about $700 for their cheaper stuff.

a good set of struts and springs, will almost cost what a decent set of coils would be. but dont get the racelands man, at least get the next step up from that

    Raceland = Bad

    OK

I would like to stay under $600.....possible?

    How about the Godspeeds? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GODS...Q5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_3435wt_1009

Under $600, I've read some pretty good reviews on them (but for 240sx, couldn't find any on Subarus)

It would be nice to keep a strut setup....I've never worked with coilovers before. I'm VERY familiar with struts and have no problems at all with them....Coilovers are a different story though. But the final deciding factor in this will be the price.

I just priced springs, mounts, struts through tirerack and came up with $740

Still junk. I cheaped out and got a set of Megan Coil Overs on my car and it was just a horrible experience. I got a set of BC's and couldn't ahve been happier. They are the absolute best bang for the buck.

wasn't it the godspeeds that the shaft broke and folded the wheel in? Remember a thread about that on nabisco just not sure of the make

How about just finding another used suspension for your car that's stock? That'd buy you some time and safety. I know that isn't what you want to hear, but when your budget cannot afford the right choices, it's best to be patient. We've all been there, and I strongly encourage you to take our advice. I know you simply don't want to hear it. You've asked for our opinion and I'd say the answer is unanimous.

shop around for someones used STI struts and throw some nice springs on

Aside from my obviously flawed recommendation, this sounds like the best thing to do on a budget, while being quick.
You're obviously worried about your safety, so this will be quick, and not as time consuming as shopping for aftermarket struts/springs.

    godspeeds= still junk

    our coilover setup= still a strut set-up

you'de be better off buying a set of monroe's from walmart and wrx springs than spending money for Godspeeds

then you don't need coilovers at.all. you need a decent strut/spring combination with the fenders rolled. You can get something used off RS25.com or NASIOC that will help with the budget.

coilovers for 400-500 is a bad idea....at the very least, u should be looking at bc's

was there ever confirmation that the Megans were built/valved at the same place as the BC's? i remember that was a discussion a year or so ago.

You mean China? The same factory that's spitting out the K-Sports and Godspeeds?

  27. Jake

    Jake Active Member

well i had heard that BCs were revalved (better) megans. never heard any confirmation or denial of that.

They are. Wes confirmed it after calling megan/BC and getting the properly valved struts.

Megan, BC, Apexi, and the majority of the Taiwanese Coil Overs all come out of the same factory. That doesnt mean they are all the same. I have had both the Megan Street and BC BR and I can tell you that they are not the same. I know the main thing that I noticed was the diameter of the piston and the quality of the build on the strut. Yes, I broke both of them down and compared side by side. The BC's are worlds better than the Megan Street.

oh yeah wasn't implying that both were identical or anything, but that they are assembled in the same place. but then again most products that are the same thing by different manufacturers in Asia ARE assembled or at least, in part built in the same factories.

I've been browsing NASIOC but I have never been over to RS25....actually never heard of it until now. I'll check it out. Thanks for the link.

This isn't at all about what I want to hear. I'm asking because I really dont know lol. I have no problem taking advice from people who know more about it then I do.

To be honest what I want to hear is either "These are good", or "You will regret it if you get these. Why don't you try this instead". Y'all told me that it was a bad idea and gave me other options....I have no complaints with that :)

I think the shipping prices you out of that one. Nevertheless, I do think that you're on the right track here. We need to keep an eye out for any stock suspension that pops up for ya. I think you'd feel a considerable difference just moving to stock WRX struts and stock springs. I'm sure we'll have a set come up for sale sooner than later. In fact, have you tried calling All Pro (770-751-7786 or support[at]allprosubaru[dot]com)? They may have what you're looking for.

    Quick question on my alignment.

I'm thinking of running something close to these numbers. Reduce understeer a little bit and still have decent tire life. Am I taking the specs too far?

    FRONT
    Camber : -1.3
    Caster : N/A
    Toe : -0.5

    REAR
    Camber : +1.0
    Caster : N/A
    Toe : 0

BTW - I do have camber bolts on all 4 wheels

Well you know 95% of us are assholes so what do you expect. You get your little stutter on the LGT taken care of by the way?

Went through all the wiring and didn't see any kind of problems. PSI from the fuel pump is good....no vacuum leaks, blah blah blah blah blah.

I honestly think it has something to do with the car not going into open / closed loop or whatever. It tends to overcool its self when its cold outside. My temp gauge will ride very low...This problem started when it started to get a bit cooler outside....and the past few times when its been 45+ outside, it hasn't happened once. I'm going to be visiting SOK for a thermostat, and then I will flush out all the coolant and see what happens from there. Maybe the thermostat is stuck open.

picked up the struts. now its time to put them on....woo hoo.

anyone that can chime in with some decent alignment specs?

edit : all 4 struts installed. I put the front camber bolts all the way negative so they would match eachother as close as possible until I get to the shop for an alignment. negative camber ftw on dry pavement.....scary on wet pavement and snow lol.

Other then that, suspension feels great. I feel a lot more connected to the road then I did before the swap
