Can someone give me a basic explanation of the popular turbos our there for our cars?

I have a TD04 right now. Am I at the bottom of the totem pole?

Laugh it up...go ahead lol. I've never owned a turbo vehicle until now so the whole turbo thing is new to me

    what's your hp goal?

Yes, the stock wrx turbo is about the bottom. From there you can go to the vf series like the stock Sti turbo or the td05 series which includes the 16g, 18g and 20g. It really will depend on your goal for the car.

Im sur the engine will handle 450 or so as it sits with the exception of the 660 injectors, but im not sure how safe I am with the transmission in the 375 and up range. I would eventually like to hit 500. Ill be on the dyno today. Im not sure what my numbers will be on the EJ20R with the rotated td04.

Another question. Is rotating just for size issues with bigger turbos, or is there any kind of performance gains with rotqtion?

    Sorry for the noob questions

My best guess is that motor will not make it much past 350 to be honest. The transmission, about the same or less depending on how you treat it. If you are planning on 500 you will need a different motor, 2.2 closed deck or 2.5 are your best bets along with a built 5 speed or 6 speed.

Rotated turbos are rotated to fit larger turbine and compressor housings (bigger turbos) that are capable of flowing more air and supporting higher hp.

The plan is an EJ257 block with a built 5 speed. Im still unsure of what heads Ill run on it though.

This car was tuned at 12psi w/ 3xx to the wheels on the old turbo.

Im actually at Batlground waiting for Dan to get here so I can get it tuned for the new turbo. Ill post up some numbers in a few hours

I'm sure the reason for a rotated setup on your car was because of fitment issues. I would get a WRX subframe and exhaust if planning to keep stock location turbo.

My understanding is the car had a 35r on it and previous owner swapped a tdo4 to sell. Mind posting pics of this setup? Sounds like it was more work than it was worth fabbing the piping for a rotated stock turbo

So what did it put down yesterday?

Doing it today. Half way through the tune the trigger wheel broke off. Dunno if it was wheel or weld failure. Already have a new wheel, i just need to put it on

Nice little rotated setup you have there, hehe. Waiting on the numbers.

It will be fixed Monday or Tuesday. After Dan had finished the first part of the tune getting the a/f ratios right...he started working on the boost and the damn wheel broke off.

We heard a loud pop and he shut the car off...or it shut itsself off I'm not sure.

I thought an intercooler pipe had blown off, so I ran over and checked all the pipes (because thats what it sounded like)...after looking around for a minute, we found the mangled trigger wheel...and found pieces of the timing cover all over the shop.

I'm lucking it didn't go through the radiator or wipe out the timing belt. The only thing that was damaged was the timing cover. I have it on video, I'll eventually get around to posting it.

Here is a pic I took of it after we fished it out of the engine bay

damn right! if you're not breaking anything, you're not having fun!

On second though.....not much fun has been had yet. So maybe breaking it wasn't all that fun lol

haven't seen that happen, or haven't seen that part on a Subaru?

So this car is running meth? and that part that failed is apart of the meth kit? If so just have him tune it without the meth. Little ole td04 you shouldn't need meth and have to deal with the up keep of it.

apparently a trigger wheel is part of the megasquirt ECU....

Lol the car does NOT run meth lol. I dunno why everyone thinks that. Just pump 93 octane. I had considered doing half a tank of meth for emissions, but wound up not doing it because I found a better option

The trigger wheel is part of the megasquirt standalone. Its kind if like the abs ring on a cv axle but for the crankshaft position sensor. Thats the best way I know to explain it. I have to use that since any kind of OEM sensors are about useless with a standalone

Oh silly me. I thought megasquirt was a meth pump.

Nah. Megasquirt is a standalone ecu that you build yourself. Check out diyautotune.com

FINALLY got my car back. New trigger wheel is insalled, and all the damage that was done from it flying off is fixed.

    My dyno numbers are:

    230.66 awhp
    229.05 torque
    @15psi

It could have been pushed to about 18psi, but we stopped at 15.

very nice. considering I made 283hp 280trq on vf43 at 18psi. Why not 18 psi?

Odd it didn't make peak torque till 4500 rpms on a stock wrx turbo. What type of boost control?
