Hi fellow ATLiens, I have a '11 STI with little less than 7k miles on it. Last Friday I was driving on the highway and wanted to casually pass someone. In sixth gear, I changed lanes, and hit the throttle. The RPM gauge went from about 3k rpm to 5.5k rpm and just revved high until coming back down to 3.1 and slowly letting me accelerate. My foot was not on the clutch. I was on a flat surface. The engine was warmed up, and it was the first time I saw this happen. Also, the slipping can be re-created in every gear if the throttle is pushed 80%-100% in and the revs go above 3k rpm. I took it to the dealer on Friday as well and they basically told me to drive on it for a few days as they cannot setup any time with me until this Wednesday. They also said that they could not fix up the car before getting an approval from corporate. The dealer has to send pictures of my taken apart transmission for approval. Is this the norm? Given that the problem can worsen, and that I am leaving the country, I though to have the car in my garage and deal with it when I come back in July. The car works fine shifting around 2.5-2.9k rpm. However, should there need to be any aversion, the car cannot quickly accelerate. I have not been misusing the car either. I get about 18-19mpg with 50/50% city/highway driving. The car is completely stock, and this would be the third time I had to take the car to get service since October when I picked it up. So, what do you think is the problem? Is the clutch gone? Flywheel? Some other component? Let me know what you think, and if Subaru is going to fix it on their dime. Thanks!
It definatly sounds like a clutch problem to me. There should be no question about it that Subaru will fix it under warranty. However, I think they want to check it out first for signs of abuse before committing to repair it. Is the car all stock or have you modified it at all? Do you drive with your foot resting on the clutch?
Yes. However the dealer explained all of the negative things that could happen if I drove with the car (ex: being stranded, car accident, breaking something else) and yet they encouraged me to drive the car for four days. The car is completely stock. I never rest my foot on the clutch. I fixed my OP so that is clearly stated.
As weird as this sounds, I still think its your clutch. I don't know if you have a defective clutch, you're rough on it, don't drive it right, etc. Who knows. Either way, at 7k miles Subaru should replace the clutch for you at no charge. Even under abuse, a clutch should last over 7K. I beat the hell out of my cars, and my clutches last 30K+
Took it to Classic Subaru. They did not have time for it before the 23rd so I'll just deal with it when I come back from my trip in July.
/facepalm.. I need to get mine in there and have been putting it off. Guess I'll be waiting a little longer. If it makes you feel any better my clutch pedal creaks. Internal, not the pedal itself. After getting the fork lubed up it stopped very briefly but is back at it (hence why I need to take it again). I don't like the clutch in the GR. It sometimes feels like it slips briefly on harder changes, but I think it might just a mental slippage.
I agree, the clutch on the GR is lacking. Please let us know what the dealership says when you return from your trip and get her over there on the 23rd.
I took it back to Classic Subaru and they worked on my car for 5 business days. I got a new transmission and it was covered under the warranty. Seems like something went bonkers and melted some parts to the flywheel. Anyway, the car runs great. The only thing that sucks is that I drove my girlfriend's civic for the past few months and I'm finding myself driving really slow in the STI.
