So, I'm currently stuck in PA at a rest stop and my car is messed up. I was driving down the hwy on cruise control when the car started to bog down for no reason. The gages seem to go dead and I was not able to take the car out of fith gear. I managed to pull into a rest stop and shut the car off. As soon as I shut it off I was able to take it out of gear. I'm able to start the car but when I put it in gear nothing happens, I hear a weird rattlieng noise coming from the turbo area when the car is running. I just filled the car up at a shell station about 38miles ago and then this happens. Any ideas as I'm pretty screwed right now.
You don't have a CEL code? I'm sure you don't have a way to read it since you're on the road. I keep hearing the catted uppipe might be the culprit if it's making a rattling noise near the turbo area. If so, then it could be an emissions related problem. I did a search and found that some had issues with purge valves or a loose hose. I'm not sure why when you go into gear, you can't move the car.
So, I think the noise is coming from the tranny. I can start the car and put it in first and second but thats it. The car won't move when in gear also. This is going to be expensive.
There is a Subaru performance shop called IAG performance about 60 miles from where I am. I'm going to have the car towed there and get a rental.
IAG is definitely a reputable shop. I remember you were having tire issues a couple months ago...did you end up replacing all 4 like we all suggested, or only 1-2? If you only replaced 1-2, this is your diff sayings THANKS FOR NOT LISTENING. Good luck
Oh yeah forgot about that. Suggested the recommended factory tire pressure and all tires have to be the same tread length. Yikes, that's not good. If the center diff is gone. Pull the drive shaft and run it on front wheels only. It will drive like crap but will get you limping home. Not sure how long you can do that on just the front diff. Anyone????? What do I know.
sure if you want to guarantee total destruction of the transmission, lock it up just right and you twist up a crankshaft too.
So rather than just needing a transmission he'll need an engine and tranny? He did the right thing by having it towed to a shop. No need risking anything especially based off of Internet diagnostics
sounds like a center diff to me, you can still drive if it were the front or rear. ask me how i know.... and if you didnt replace all 4 tires with new ones or tires of the same treadwear, then that is almost certainly the culprit and you will be coming out of pocket (i.e. NO WARRANTY)
So, I did replace tires. When I checked the tranny fluid level it was empty so something must have happened which caused it to drain out. Maybe a crack?
or a clog somewhere due to shredded metal, or a bad gasket. overheating tranny could cause the same issues, though the sounds pretty much point to something broken, due to heat.
When my turbo went out it pretty much did the same thing you stated in your original post. I didnt get CEL or anything... not sure if I am a little late on this post but just figured i would throw my .02 in
There is a rear seal on the transmission that could be the culprit. That particular seal failed on my WRX at about 100k miles... luckily I caught it super early. Good luck man! That is a shitty situation.
Ok. So the tranny is pretty much shot. They said it looked like it has been out before because it was missing 3 bolts. I've never taken it out so it must have been done before I got the car. They are going to open it up today and see how messed up it is. I might have to get a new tranny for it
Damn bro. I was in the same boat as you when I first got my wrx 3 years ago. Transmission gave out on me when I shifted into 3rd gear at about 3.5k rpms, just gave out. I traded it plus cash for another one. g/l with urs.
Last time I had my shifter stuck in gear, found out that my clutch line dried up and cracked and left me with fluid all over my bay and on the side of the road. GL with the repairs, doesn't sound like fun, but at least you found the source.
I did get 4 tires and I checked the fluid level before and it was fine. So before you run your mouth ask first.
So, is anyone selling a working tranny that I can buy and ship to MD? They are trying to find a used one because mine is not worth rebuilding. My options are find a used one or get rapped on a new one.
Never said that what you actually did.....said that you'll never have to worry unless one of them happened. LOL
Give AllPro a quick call. Not sure if they can assist you from out of state, but knowing these guys, they would try their best. # 770 751 7786

I would do that but I need the car working asap. IAG was able to find a tranny from a place called Andrewtech and will be putting it in the car on Monday.
