So i read the turbo thread and my brain kinda hurts. Which turbo does the 03 wrx have? what is the diff between the 03 wrx turbo and the sti turbo?
boost is dependent on what the turbo is set-up to run. The Td-04 is smaller then the vf-39. As far as size the td04 on 2.0 liter wrx engine with supporting mods is a ~240whp turbo on 93oct pump and a vf-39 is a ~300whp turbo on 93 oct pump. The vf-39 spools about ~750-1k rpms later then the td-04
so if i wanted to replace my stock turbo with the sti turbo would and bolt on and work or do i need to swap out the intercooler to the sti as well. im not going to pump tons of boost in it id like to keep it as close to sti stock as i can. the car is still my daily driver.
it would work better. You'd also want to look into swapping in an STi uppipe as it removes the cats (which can break down and get sucked through the turbo). Don't forget, you'll need / want to upgrade the injectors, fuel pump and you'll also need a tune.
300 whp is pushing it on a 2.0L imho. Can be done be most figures are between 270-285 whp. All 5 cars that I have installed VF-39's on got those figures on pump 93 octane only.
iv done the uppipe already to get rid of the catt. My stock turbo is making some bad sounds so its on its last leg. so now that i know bout the sti turbo what about another stock wrx turbo but maybe turning the boost up some? remember im not trying to make a 300+hp monster i wouldnt mind 250 or 260. so far i have cold air intake, uppipe,3in catback, light wight fly wheel.
For best performance, get rid of the cold air intake and go back to stock. VF39, STi pinks injectors (DeatsheWerks makes em), Walbro fuel pump or equivalent, and a protune. Bam done and rock solid reliable.
^^^ pretty much this. Turning up the boost won't necessarily make the magical power. When tuning the car, they'll optimize the boost based on other factors (AFR, temperatures, gas being used).
Been a while but tuning is like $350-500 depending who does it. Turbos sell for around $400-500. If you get a used VF-39 (or any STi turbo...they are all about the same basically) make sure the wg doesn't have the typical crack in it. Injectors are $349. http://www.deatschwerks.com/products/fuel-injectors/sport-compact/subaru/wrx/wrx-2002-11 Fuel pump you can get the Deatchwerks too. $99 http://www.deatschwerks.com/products/fuel-pumps/dw200-in-tank-fuel-pump
Also if you want to go Cobb factor that price in but an Open Source tune works just as well. I would recommend an STi TMIC but it's not needed....the stock IC will just heat soak more.
It's better. The stock one really heats up fast in the middle of the summer. The 08+ Sti TMIC are VASTLY better....so much so you can run a gt35r on them.
I was running a VF-39 on my 03 WRX for 60k+ miles before I sold it last summer. It is a great set up! A good power boost and about as much reliability as you could hope for a non-stock set up.
make sure you replace the Y-pipe, too. The STi pipe is metal, the wrx one is a plastic type that has a tendency to rip and tear
no, you'll need to replace the plastic one (wrx version) with a metal one (sti version). Just make sure if you buy the STi TMIC it comes with the factory y-pipe
thanks to everyone for all the info.im going to allpro in the am to see if my turbo is going out. if so ill be looking at doing a sti turbo set up. wanted as much info as to what i was getting into. glad to know i can count on my subie brothers
