Changing the timing belt, water and oil pumps, all idlers, and all fluids in the car. Ran into two potentially very bad situations. FIRST... upon installing the new timing belt, the cam gears on the driver side decided to take it upon themselves to rotate off their timing marks. Per the maintenance manual, I spun the cams appropriately but god knows what happened when they freely spun off. We shall see when the motor is cranked up. Then Justin drained my rear diff and we found this little gem... hnoes:
The valves are fine. Although its not a good thing for the cams to free spin like that, its rare that it causes serious problems. As for the diff plug, is it a powdery metal or is it solid chunnks matt? I've pulled drain plugs out of transmissions and diffs that looked like that and the cars had no issue before or after..... So in short, you should be fine. lol
valves are ok. Rear diff if it's powdery should be fine. If it's chunks ummmm time for a new diff as it's probably spider gears ripping apart.
Yeah those are chucks of metal, curved like little finger nails. The R.diff has not given me any sounds or problems, so I'm not worried about it.
Hellz NO! I don't think this car can handle that to any degree, ahahha This thing is just a beater that gets a little dirt road action every once in a while
But your's is fast. Found out today that my driver side header was only being held on by one nut. Nut number two decided to back his way all the way down the stud, but rusted before it could come all the way off. Nut number three was just hanging out bouncing around in the heat shield. Oil pan o-ring disintegrated as well.
Fast is relative... It just makes alot of noise. lol I'm trying to picture this O-ring.... Between the pan and block?
I have to drive up to Stivers Subaru and Six Star Service to get the BPV gasket and this stupid o-ring.
You do not.... What he is trying to say is no one actually knows why that o ring is there because it doesn't do anything. None of the aftermarket oil pans use them. Just leave it off.
I'd rather error on the side of caution and replace a gasket for my stock pan. Its cheap... So why not.
I'll need a hand tomorrow if anyone could come over. Just need someone to turn the steering wheel and pump the brakes to flush the power steering and braking systems. Beer and food provided.
Because the cost of had gettin to and from the stealership to buy that gasket instead of your local autoparts store, isn't worth it for a part an engine builder says you don't need.....?
Truth be told, when B reel said "no you don't," it was to imply that I don't have to go to the dealer, because he had the two gaskets I needed. Not that which you have inferred. Taking into consideration I don't know many people on this board, I take everyone's advice with a grain of salt unless I personally know them and can vouch for the knowledge on the subject. Engine builder or not, there are tons of people on the internet who give out false information. Subaru spent millions of dollars designing every single component of these cars. Subaru says I need an o-ring. I got an o-ring. Also, no local auto part stores carry any gaskets other than permatex or head gaskets. Thanks again Brian!
Got it fired up tonight. No clinks and clanks. No leaks. Hopefully all is well. Flushing the steering and brakes tomorrow. Thanks for Steve, Justin, Brian, and Reed for lending a much needed hand when they did.
Completed everything today. Rex is purring like a cougar and seems to hold boost, so doesn't look like I damaged anything.
