So I have been given clearance to purchase new tires next month and wanted to see what kind of input you all would give. I have been a big fan of Bridgestone and their RE series. I am replacing a set of RE-11s that I have absolutely loved and got many more miles than expected. I am leaning toward getting another set of these. 245/40/18 or maybe 265/35/18 Also if anyone has suggestions for place with good prices, please let me know! Meredith....Brian, what are to two running? Thanks for all the help in advance! :wiggle:
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec!!!! Wow can you run 265 on an 08? That's pretty bad ass if you can. 245 to 265 seems like a huge jump. I'm pretty sure you can run 255 safely though.
I very much agree with this too. I've got about 3k of very spirited miles on my set of PSS's and they still are not showing any camber wear and they grip extremely well. They might not have that initial turn in bite like the starspecs, but they have a much better tolerance for heat and never felt greasy running on the dragon. Also, they are nice and quiet, almost all-season quiet.
^ seriously. Might want to ask some 4touge people who have seen the Mini in action lately (post feb trip). Michelin Pilot Super Sport, 30k tread warranty and perform insanely well. Won't ever be buying another tire for my daily driver/mountain car. fun little time pacing johnson ferry yesterday
If they made the Super Sport in my size I would run them (-_-) They don't go any wider than 245 in 17 though...so sad
Another vote for the PSS's. I run 265/35's and they have been the best tires I have owned on any vehicle to date. Running -2.8 on camber with mountain runs, track days and even over 2,000 highway miles this past weekend and they still look great.
The PSS is awesome, wear is great, it has big grip and its quiet. I have them in a 265\35\18 on my bugeye now. I'm about to take them off because they aren't as fast as the Neova AD08, They feel soft and the car moves around on them. The steering feel is terrible. Siegel forwarded me a letter between himself, David Chow and a Michelin engineer. In that letter the engineer explains that the PSS was never intended to be a front tire. It was designed to run as a rear tire with a PS2 up front. I'm giving my PSS one more chance this weekend at AMP, going to try some new settings and pressures, if something doesn't improve they are coming off and Yokohama Neova AD08s are going back on.
I believe you, it is definitely lacking sidewall stiffness. If I was going for a track tire, I wouldn't choose the PSS. Several of us have seen how much sidewall flex happens even with 45psi in the tire, there is even video.. It's perfect for what Alex is looking for though, for extensive miles on the street with the ability to grip when you want.
Yeah for a track and motorsports specific tire i would certainly be keeping AD08's and RE11's among some of the front runners. For a street tire though i dont know if you can do much better then a PSS.
As most of you that know how I drive I think you will agree I need a stiff side wall. I believe I will be getting another set of the RE-11s. I believe Doug was running265/35/18 on his GR. I will pm him and check. Thanks for all the feedback guys!
Sent you a PM in regards to that comment, with videos. But if you are confident and like the tire you have been using, keep it! That's important as well
That's the thing, I don't think you do need a stiff sidewall. The sidewall flex that they mentioned happened in aggressive high speed situations on a track or amazing roads driven by someone with big balls. No offense to you, I just don't think you need a "track ready" tire. Plus the PSS is what was used on the One Lap GTR both years of I'm not mistaken.
^^ agreed, sure the sidewall has flex, and I'm pretty sure I know what video you guys are referring to. But, I and I'm sure bixs will agree with, it does NOT kill driver confidence. Also at that tire size, the price points are fairly close, but I would be willing to bet that the PSS will be able to outlast the RE-11's in a DD and spirited drive scenario.
I like stiff sidewalls personally. So no more love for the Star Specs? I did like the Bridgestone RE070 a little better once they were heated up.
I liked them a lot, and yes that initial turn in was significantly nicer than the PSS. However, they got kinda greasy on me a few 'laps' in on the Dragon, while the last time I went up with the PSS's they never felt greasy, and some will agree I went a little bit quicker that time around. Also I kinda like that I can have a conversation going down the highway with the PSS vs sounding like a truck with swampers on
I had zero issues with entering turn 1 at Roebling at a ridiculous speed on the PSS's. They can handle track duty as proved by Leh Keen on the OLOA GT-R and his personal GT3 RS. If they can handle his driving...anything any of us can throw at them is a Sunday drive in comparison...
It does not, and there are no issues with tossing a car around on these. I don't have the ~700lbs more you do alex, but again looking at leh in the one lap cars is proof enough.
They were sponsored by Michelin for onelap too weren't they? Or maybe that was the entire event that they sponsored. I also read Leh and Cicio's reviews on some GTR website as well. Definitely trying to sell them. For me I'd spend the extra $20 a tire and go Bridgestone. If you want cheaper go Star Specs. If you take breaks between runs you don't have to worry about them getting greasy. All that said I don't DD mine so I don't care about the noise and comfort levels. I'll go back to Bridgestone when these Star Specs are dead. http://topspeedtuned.com/onelap/
Knowing both of them...watching both cars drive...having them on my car...and having them on multiple friends cars that have owned the Bridgestones and Star Specs...I can tell you it isn't trying to sell them. Be skeptical if you want, but I highly doubt Leh would put tires on his personal track car that know one sees or even knows about just to sell tires on a GT-R site.
Full disclosure that's all. I'm not getting paid by any manufacture or getting free product from anybody. I'm also not a professional driver. I'll wait around and see what the autoX community moves towards. Since most of them are paying for the tires themselves and trying to get the best times. Love what you've done to the car, but I don't know your driving habits and I don't know any of your friends.
Who said he got them for free? You just assumed that which is also not true. I have multiple track days on mine with -2.8 degrees of camber on all four corners, multiple mountain runs and just came back from a 2,000+ mile road trip. The tires performed just about perfectly in all conditions and aren't even showing any camber wear.
I didn't assume anything...I'll go find the GTR forum where Cicio and Leh were giving their review of those tires and post the link for you. Not sure why you're so defensive about your opinion. I've never driven in a group with you so I just don't know your driving habits. However, I HAVE driven with Alex in a group. sponsors listed in this post: http://wrxatlanta.com/forums/showpost.php?p=432494&postcount=1 http://www.nagtroc.org/forums/index.php?/topic/69156-michelin-pss-tire-test-by-topspeed-motorsports/ "With the amount of GT-R owners switch over to the Michelin PSS after the stock run flats we decided it was time to get you guys some hard data. We teamed up with Michelin USA and they were kind enough to supply us with several sets of tires for back to back testing."
been out of the tire market for a while... how does the PSS compare to the hankook RS3s in terms of grip in the wet and the dry? I know the hankooks dont like heat but man when I had the RS2s they were really nice...and cheap.
I think the sidewall flex being mentioned on the Michelins creates the impression that they are in the same class as some pos Sunny's which isn't the case. It was witnessed only under extreme driving conditions and even then it wasn't a problem, just something noticed after the run. Bottom line I don't think Alex needs a super performance summer tire that autox and track junkies use (like he seems to be looking for.) there's a reason he got more mileage out of them than expected and I think it's because his driving style isn't as aggressive as he thinks unless he is out pretending to be Ken Block when noone is watching. And Alex don't you have a second set of wheels? I say go all out on those with sticky tires.
This might help Alex decide how much weight to put behind Robb's review, but I'm not sure how that helps me have any idea how he pushes the car. Your mini review doesn't do much for me either.....because I know you :squint: Alex was asking Brian and Meredith what they were running due to their autoX experiences I believe.
From my experience with Robb he was about your pace unless you turned it WAY up since last time we've been up.
The Hankook's seem to get destroyed when they get hot. At least mine did. Cost per mile ended up being more for the Hankook's than the PSS's for my use.
They were sponsored this year but not last year. The back to back testing was actually done at Roebling on a stock GT-R. Not the OLOA car. The rules of OLOA actually state that you have to buy your tires from Tire Rack at their facility before you start the event. No one gets free tires for OneLap.
I've been practicing...things have changed. Except for on the way back to the motel. For some reason that side with the drop off still makes me dial it back some. I'd rather hit a wall than fly off a cliff.
I haven't run with you in about 2 years. I missed the last dragon trip due to the body shop crap. Trip before that I ran with Minnoe, IdiotPilot, and MeFry Rice Feb 2011. I'm not sure we've run together since I moved up here actually. That's fair enough though.. I was stock except for suspension then.
I never said they were given free tires for One Lap. Are you a lawyer by profession? Geez, I've put my $.02 in for Alex.
It's not really defensive about my opinion as it is about the skepticism of others due to the fact they run them on a car, are sponsored by them or sell them. I run into it A LOT with my biking site. Everyone says full disclosure but even when you give them that...they always think you are hiding something. Most shops could care less what tires you buy as long as you buy them from their shop. It is just a recommendation based on use and history. I wasn't trying to say go to TopSpeed for them, just that a driver a really respect recommends them as well. Probably over sensitivity on my part due to my history online with reviews. Don't take it personally as it is not meant to be. Just me being a online baby that's all.
PSS discount tire 1142.00 out the door...hope to have them in a few weeks here. Thanks again from feedback guys I really appreciate it
Make sure to ask Discount to tape down your tire weights. I have seen a couple of them fall off from there lately. Otherwise, I have been incredibly happy with their pricing and service. Congrats on the new tread!
