I dont know if i would think to cover my face like that knowing the glass was going to shatter or grab the wheel with both hands and try to turn. id say he did surprisingly well although he was slowing down for the turn already
oh man - it looks like the deer crossed first right when the video started, then doubled back. Holy shit that could've been bad, good thing his first reaction was to cover his face
I may be mistaken, but i think pro-racers who know an impact is imminent are taught to let go of a steering wheel as it would just break your arms on impact from the shock of the rack N pinion...
In several of the instructor schools I've taken I was taught to make sure your visor is down and cross your arms like you are grabbing both shoulders. I've only had to do it twice and both times we didn't hit anything. I wouldn't let go of the steering wheel till the last possible second. I think it usually brakes thumbs more than it does arms.
thumbs fingers and wrist injuries are the large percentage, broken arms are usually associated with roll overs when the arms aren't tethered.
lol, this reminds me of the last NASCAR race I watched. they kept talking how the drivers were taking lessons from Danica who immediately took her hands off the wheel in her wreck (a lesson she was taught from Indy car).
It was funny as hell. None of the NASCAR guys were doing it, then after she raced and got in like 2-3 wrecks in 2 weekends.. lol.. anyway, they all started doing it.
