Sooo. It always annoys me when something is called rice when I feel it should not be. Not that it has happened to me since I have had my wrx, but still.. its like.. if it looks pretty well themed with the car, why is it rice?

Though honestly at this point in time I think the majority of it is opinionated, where do you guys think the line is between what is considered rice, and what is not. And is it always bad?

to me, it's anything that detracts from the true value of the car. A body kit, tastefully done, looks really good. What happens too often, though, is somebody skimps and buys a cheap-ass body kit to be 'different' and it completely kills the lines on the car. A huge ugly front bumper, ugly sideskirts back to a park bench wing looks like shit, IMO, especially when you throw on some hideous wheels / tires with a terrible stance and offset. The stock STi has subtleties that can add an aggressive look without going overboard (the side skirts have that extra curve in them, the front lip, the factory hood scoop).

As J_P says, form should always follow function.

Edit - exhaust is another one. Pretty much any mod that makes you look like you're desperately trying to add something, but don't have the financial standing to do it right.

I consider a basically stock 4 banger with a horrible exhaust job or something to make it seem faster than it is and/or has a under construction sticker to be a "rice burner"

That's called being on budget doing what you desire, not everyone can buy top notch stuff, or have same taste.

As for rice? That doesn't exist to me, it's a word made up by people who have nothing better to do but stand around and point at others.

    To each their own.

I prefer class, along with a little tact.

so is riced out and a mexi ride the same thing then? Where it looks like they bought every accessory available at autozone?

This has nothing to do with a budget either. If you buy a bunch of aftermarket body work and you don't/can't paint it that's not doing what you want that's not planning and being impatient and lazy.

I may laugh as you drive by in your ferris wheel, but I'll respect you if it's done right.

of what my car or examples?

But one of the reasons I posted this is because I wanted to wrap some parts of my car in the 3M vinyl carbon fiber. The parts were gonna be the rood, hood scoop, fog covers and the top half of the wing.

Seriously isnt cf mostly for looks anyway?

CF is definitely used just for the looks in many instances, but the original reason for using it was to shave weight.

I've tried to look at it objectively lately. If you just figure it's a type of style rather than pretending to be carbon fiber I can't really see a reason why carbon fiber wrap is 100% rice.

Here's the bottom line in my opinion......if you like it and want it then do it. Forget the others...it's your car not theirs.

I agree with this, but you better do it right. I may not like it, but I see plenty of "stanced" cars on stance nation that were done right.

You say that now but you'll also be the first to say it looks like shit when someone posts pictures up of something they like but you don't

Its my opinion that I don't like it but that doesn't change the fact that its their car. If they like it then more power to them whether its my cup of tea or not.

Y'all thought mine looked like crap with the stickers...and voiced it. Did it keep me from doing it? Not at all. That's the issue with you guys....can't take an honest opinion for nothing.

Every car other than mine is rice. Damn ricers...

I don't really think of cars as rice or not. Even cars that are built on the most extreme of budgets can look really good if thought out and the owners heart is put into it. I have a harder time respecting builds that are just a bunch of "I like this so I'll throw it on" parts. It's their car so they can do what they wish. I am not going to waste my time getting upset over something I don't own (there are crazy expensive cars that have this done as well).

I just know I personally respect cars that are thought out and look clean. Whether they are stanced (smaller percentage here for me at least), track prepped or show...you can tell who really put everything they had into the car and are proud of what they have accomplished.

I also have issue with buying visual parts when there are other damaged parts on the car. Spend the money to fix it...then fix it up...

rice is a pejorative that USED to be used to indicate anything asian made vs american made.

i guess to me, dropping rice tells me more about the person who used the term than the ride.

    I just call it tacky...

There is more than likely a story behind that...or at least a reason...I would hope.

I think that anything that is flashy and not functional (say underglow) is rice. However, it bothers me when people thing the Sti wing is rice. It is very functional, and I can understand where they are coming from, since it's huge, but I think it looks great. It's all opinion.
