Alright so I have an 04 wrx with a rebuilt stock 2.0 (about 7k miles on it now) and 5speed trans. Though the block its self has been rebuilt, I believe many the old parts from before (with 150k) it was rebuilt were simply reused. Because of that, I have no idea what condition the turbo is actually in. So instead of waiting im trying to replace the turbo asap. Since I am replacing the turbo I figured I might as well just upgrade it, along with the correct support. And I am looking to reach about 250-270 hp. Current mods: 3' Perrin down pipe, Spt CAI intake, and Spt exhaust. untuned. I just bought a VF39 turbo and I have some denso 650cc injectors. I know I need a tmic, fuel pump, and of course tune. But do I really need headers and a up pipe? What else should I look to replace/upgrade before I buy all these parts.
gut your up pipe and stock headers are just fine. That setup will easily get to the power goal you specified
From being around some of the guys on here, most will recommend to replace the stock WRX UP. if it matters, drew installed a vf43 setup on my wrx. vf43 sti tmic modded injectors STI UP Tuned by TopSpeed on dynojet which made 283hp 280trq. target boost was, is 18.5 psi. Now after 40k miles, still running strong.
Just by yourself a catless uppipe off Ebay. Most all are good, just use OEM turbo gaskets. If you don't gut the oem uppipe right you can destroy the new turbo quite easily.
On a small turbo like the VF, it will naturally spool somewhat quick. But I have tested back to back an OEM sti catless up vs a Grimmspeed up and gained 300rpm in spool on a 2 liter with a 20g. Granted my turbo's a good bit larger, so my results would be better, but I always recomend Grimmspeedup pipe's to my customers rather than gutted/sti/egay.... As fro the factory exhaust manifold vs header, its always something you can add down the line. When you begin pushing the smaller turbo/motor hard you will see decent gains. But until then, on a conservetive tune, the factory unit is perfectly fine...

with no problems at all!?!? So I can hold on headers, but I might as well get an up pipe and silicone turbo inlet? Thanks for all the input by the way.
Sounds like the engine work has been covered pretty well. Have you done any other suspension/braking mods to balance your go-fast goodies? I would say sway bars and brake pads at a minimum (though I don't know all that much about 04-05 WRX's). I had a VF39 '03 WRX and always felt I had about 30% more engine than brakes...
Brembos fix that I got back into dad's car (stock wrx brakes) and almost went straight through a stop sign after getting used to my car (STi Brembos).... I did it on two different ocassions. Solution? I need another set of Brembos. ssh:
Or Legacy GT Calipers/rotors with good pads. They can be had for the cheap too. Hit me up if you need a fuel pump. I have two Deatschwerks DW200 pumps I will sell cheap. They are essentially a Walbro 255 with a 3 year no hassle warranty.
02-05 are the exact same car with some minor changes not affected by the OP's plans these are highly underrated as a good upgrade for 02-05 and are great street/mountain brakes with some upgraded pads and SS lines
I almost forgot about suspension/brakes -_-. Yea I will look into getting some brakes. and inetgroid, pmed you about the fuel pump.
