So either they were visiting someone in my community, or actually lived there but pulling into the neighborhood last night in the wifes 2013 impreza, what is in front of me pulling in as well but a 2dr all black impreza, early 90's with an obvious STi swap or some type of big build. Easily had 3" exhaust with a massive single outlet, sounded like an EJ25 and from the smell / turbine spool sound even at barely above idle, clearly had no cat's either.
