I guess I am missing something here. I think building roads is one of the few things the government should do.

 

I think the point is that the government doesn't actually build the roads. They hire private companies to do it, so they are not building anything. They are acting as a liaison for the taxpayer.

they may outsource some of their projects, but that's not an entirely true blanket statement. they also oversee that they're built to a specific standard, along with the proper accessories (signs, reflectors, guard rails, etc.)

i agree infrastructure should be one of the essential functions of government, but the point was they hire out a lot of the work. and Drew, you're right they 'oversee' a lot and have inspectors who check the work to certain standards, but how many georgia DOT workers are actually shoveling asphalt? that's the point of the funny.
