Where would you start?

Some of you know that I've been wanting to do upgrades to my engine, but a friend of mine who is into Subies and does rally racing out in Colorado suggested that I start with my suspension and upgrade it first b/c it's a little more "bolt on" the engine. Basically there's a little less technicality to it. Whether that's true or not, is not my question though. My question to you all is if you were going to go the suspension route, where would you start? Springs? Coilovers? Sway Bars? I'm just curious.

    Thoughts?

First, take an HDPE to learn your car (driver mod). Then...brakes, sways/endlinks and then maybe springs/coilovers, depending on your needs. In that order. Are you trying to make this a track car, or just a spirited daily driver?

Spirited daily....I want something a little better than stock, but not racing level by any means. When I meet someone that asks me about my car, I want to be able to describe it on a lever other than stock...

Oh Jesus...you're just trying to show off?

Not really...I mean yes, I want to have a car I can talk about if someone asks, but I won't be just going around to people and saying "hey, check out my bad ass car". It would be a spirited daily that would see the back roads and mountains on many occasions. I've never had anything this nice before, so now that I do, I want to make it extra nice.

What did your buddy on NASIOC say?

  7. jautry27

    jautry27 Member

Not on NASIOC, I have a buddy who does rally racing in Colorado. I haven't asked him again yet, but he said what I am trying to accomplish depends on where I should really start. Like I said, a very spirited daily driver. I won't be doing this right now, but I will be saving up, so when I do get ready to start, I want to know where to start so I know what my goal will be.

I have an extra K&N sticker if you want that.

Hardy har har....If you got 2, it's a deal. That would give me like an extra 20 horsepower. I'm serious though, about where I should start when I get to that point.

By the time I am done saving, I plan on having a budget of around $2000 - $2200

I'm assuming I could get something decent going for that...I can squeeze out about $500 more if I have to

Maybe I'm confused...are you looking for us to give you a list of parts to buy?

No, I was just putting it out there. I figured you guys would tell me if I could get something decent for that price range. Of course, I'll run the parts I decide to buy through here first to see what everyone thinks of them.

Your budget is not enough for the motor. Suspension is where you should be looking. Any more questions than that is a waste of time.

I would save the brakes till last on that list since you have an 07 with the 4 pot/2 pots.

I really meant pads. Get better brake pads. Sorry, I was salivating at the thought of pecan pie.

    Brian...do you have whipped cream?

    RCE or Swift springs
    DBA rotors
    Hawk or Carbotech brake pads
    Whiteline bushings, sways, endlinks
D-spec struts or stock struts rebuilt by Feal Suspension

run with it... damn it I'm eating my pie now

    I do. How's the crust...is it flaky?

Sways was the biggest difference I noticed... The springs I've tried just made the car look better, but ride like hell (Whiteline aggressive, RCE yellow)....

    Did someone say pie?

kind of hard to get that flaky crust when it's made with graham cracker

We usually make ours from scratch. Clean it, bake the rind, scrape the rind, mix it up and bake and enjoy:)

I would do suspension first and brakes second. I would tackle the motor last. I only have eibach springs and sway bars right now. Just those small mods have made me happy for now. No point in making your motor more powerful if everything else is stock.

I wouldn't worry about coilovers if you are not racing your car. But that's just my opinion.

This is such a flashback, from when I first got into cars. Save your money, cars are not a good investment if you are blowing your savings on them.

    I want some pie now.

I say leave the car 100% as is. Don't mod a dang thing.

Diabetic, ADD, severely retarded, unemployed veterans can't afford anything on these cars.

so when you go down the road and hit a bump, does your head sound like a baby rattle?

If you really want to learn about your car and your skill level go do some AutoX. There are a few members here that are still active in this so maybe they can chime in or go here... http://wrxatlanta.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=53

No, because there has to be something in there in the first place for it to rattle.

EXACTLY!!! Probably the cheapest way to see exactly what your car can do as far as handling.

I did a few novice days when my car was a RS automatic just to get a feel of the handling...than I got hooked and upgrading suspension to engine mods progressed from there.

Novice class is like $65 and you get a good bit of runs in with seasoned instructors.

TECHNICALLY I do.....my insulin pump has batteries and without batteries, it wouldn't work. Without a working pump, I would have to go back to needles and a vial again...just saying...
