Alright guys, i have an oil leak coming from the oil filter down..and its pretty bad, and im pretty sure its not because of the over tight oil filter, or double gasket from oil filter...its coming from up top and dripping down? Talked to liltoua and he found this thread about an OIL COOLER GASKET replacement, http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums...eplace-oil-cooler-gasket-oil-filter-leak.html Have any of you guys attempted this before? Is this a common issue for oil cooler gaskets to start leaking about 125k? Easy DIY???
easy to do just make sure to clean ALL of the exterior of the cooler and surrounding area, cold engine and brake cleaner will work best. Pull the filter, unbolt filter mount bolt, replace gasket and bolt it all together. Might as well do an oil change while at it
I had to pull mine for a EL header install. its a pretty simple device. You may need a deep 24mm socket. oil filter screws on to a hollow bolt. hollow bolt hold cooler to adapter plate. adapter plate is 2pieces and the upper part bolts to the block with another hollow bolt and the bottom half bolts to the top half with 6 10mm. I think there are 3-4 orings and thats all that seal. coolant and oil will leak if you remove the cooler completely. oil will leak regardless.
Thats what i've been reading, minus well drain the coolant and remove the cooler itself and make sure i clean it up well
add to that all you have to do is take the one bolt off the coolant pipe below the cam cover and you should gain enough play to change the gasket so you don't have the joy of bleeding the coolant system. Key to this is make sure you clean everything before starting. Of course that elbow coming off the bottom of the block is a pain especially with those OEM clamps that have the integrated heat shield on them.
