So... some of you know this, many don't, but my mother passed away in February. She had cervical cancer that was treated. She overcame the cancer, but her body was too frail and weak to withstand the treatments. Ultimately, the radiation treatments the doctors gave her caused her internal organs to shut down and she passed, quite peacefully. So, that leads me to this. I have inherited 100% of her "estate", which is pretty much her car, some school loans, and other things. Specs: 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS-T (turbo) Roughly 115k on the odometer...might be more, haven't looked at it in a while. The soft top on it is shot...holes all over the place, the motor for the top is burned out and will need to be replaced. right now, we act as though it's a miata and put the top down manually.. There's some body damage, but it's minimal. I think the engine needs some work too. There may be an oil leak, and I know there's grease and shit all over the engine bay (typical of an 18 year old car). Wiring issues...sometimes the headlights don't work...sometimes they do. it's...weird. I don't know what I want to do with the car. It doesn't hold too much sentimental value to me, so I'm debating just donating it to a charity that accepts cars. Thoughts?
Matt, Sorry for your loss. My girlfriend lost her mom to cancer two years ago, and neadless to say it was a very difficult time. As for donating, I know my father donated his old buick a few years ago. I'll check with him and see who he ended up donating it to.
I'm so sorry to hear that man, the GS-T's are cool cars though! If you don't decide to donate it, I'm sure it would make a great project for the right guy.
matt sorry for your loss. Have you tried giving the student loan provider a copy of the death certificate? Supposedly you can get them dismissed.
Thanks I haven't had a chance yet. The whole estate thing is up in the air right now for other reasons. I'm looking into that though.
Sorry for your loss Matt. I probably have a wholesale guy who would buy the car from you. Buy here pay here dealerships would be all over that thing right now. Tax season is here and cheap cars are bringing top dollar. Or like Breel said you could just run it through a redlight auction up at red top or something and get some cash out of it that way.
my condolences if you are also named the executor of her estate, you're responsible for liquidating the estate to settle with the debts. If she had some school loans backed by the government, its doubly important because they'll audit the executor if things aren't settled correctly. debtors get first crack at assets. whom are the loans with?
Thanks, all. From doing my research, the will I found is essentially null and void. We are working through things to make them as fair as possible for all parties involved. might still have to get a lawyer for this, but we'll see.
Coincidentally, I've already had a few different offers on the car, so that might be easier than donating it...
Matt like Mad Mallard said any money made/gathered from anything related to the estate must first satisfy any and all liens. It's hard to talk about this but I just went through all of this with the wife's grandmother.
did she name an executor to her estate? a lawyer or a family member? because if the will is not held up as valid, then all decisions revert to an executor
I was named as the executor. However, this was before she got remarried. The will doesn't specify anything in regards that it changes if she gets married. Georgia law states unless specified, the marriage changes everything.
Thanks everyone... We had a memorial service over the weekend. I took some pics Friday. Verified the mileage at just over 103k...super low for an 18 year old car! http://imgur.com/a/ZbAiK
