Wow, my Subaru career just started and already a problem. Is there anyone in SW Atlanta that could lend a helping hand and come see what went wrong with it?
    This is what happened:
I started the engine to warm it up before a drive, minute later it bucked and shut down. I thought the timing belt snapped, pulled the covers and it is fine(replaced just a while ago). I start the engine again, it runs perfect when clutch is depressed in neutral, however if I release the clutch in neutral it dies, sort of like a gear would be selected. Clutch feel is normal, gears can be selected when engine is not running but not when it is running. Gear stick feels just like it always does. Anyone? This thing is blocking my driveway.

Funniest part is my other car has a flat tire, I was supposed to go get that fixed, now that car is sitting on jackstands immobilized and boxed in, and Subie is immobilized too. I mean can anything else go wrong? :) If anyone is able, please respond.

Ok problem lies somewhere in he clutch. I took a short video, is there a piece missing or something? In the video you can see me pressing the small piston in and that dropped the clutch to the floor, also it is loose as hell, is that the clutch cylinder, slave or master?

    Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygQyYbOxOtA&feature=youtu.be

Edit: Now clutch feel and pressure is back to normal, I did not do anything to it. I am puzzled. It seems like it is stuck in gear, but then again I can switch gear so how is that possible?

The small piston you pushed is the slave cylinder. If you follow the hard line above it, you'll find the master cylinder mounted to the firewall.

I'd start by checking the fluid level first and if it looks good, you could try bleeding it to see if it gets any better. It's really easy if you have 1 person push the clutch pedal in while the other loosens/tightens the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder. You can unbolt the slave from the tranny and raise it up while doing this to help the air escape, too. Hopefully it's not the throw out bearing.

Yeah I'm gonna need someone to push on the pedal. Also the weird thing is it seems like it is on gear when neutral, but if I try to release clutch car will not move like it would not be on gear. I am not going to try to move it anymore, I am afraid it will burn the plate since it is obviously not releasing from flywheel.

Not sure if I mentioned it but all this occurred when it was sitting idling.

Your pedal would most likely stick to the floor if it was anything hydraulic.

Throwout bearing sounds right if the clutch isn't operating.

Or something in the tranny or linkage if it would go into neutral at all. With the car off and nothing done with the clutch can you pull the shifter to neutral and the car actually be in neutral and roll?

You make it sound like its stuck in gear.

Yeah that's the thing, it acts like it's stuck on gear, but it still rolls freely. Gearstick moves normally, feels the same with or without operating clutch.

When you move the gearstick, can you hear it go in and out of the different gears or does it feel like it is just moving around?

It feels like it is going to gear, at least almost all the way, only one that makes the sound of going to gear is reverse.

sounds like you bushings on the gear selector are gone to the point it can't pull it self out of gear. it's a rare situation that it would be that gone, but it's not unheard of

I had this same thing happen to me and now I have a new tranny. When its running do you hear a whining noise?

Gear selector bushings could be one, although it has a fairly new short throw shifter and new bushings. They went in with the -07 transmission, insalled by the previous owner. As to the whining, no noises no nothing, it shifts perfectly(well it did LOL) only thing wrong with it was the synchros for 3rd gear, if I didn't rev match with my heel while downshifting coming down a freeway exit it would grind for a tenth of a second and that's it.

If car sits on idle, in neutral, is there a part that can break causing this, like someone said throw out bearing? Would it cause those symptoms? I am not exactly the specialist when it comes to transmissions. Because I just can not understand what the hell happened. Now that I managed to maneuver my daily from being boxed in, I was able to push this thing back, no resistance in drivetrain. Sorry for long and desperate posting, too many problems for one day. :)

Update: This got really interesting today, yesterday I finally got the vehicle towed to a shop. Today I called them to check out if there was any info yet, and the shop guys ask me "So what exactly is going on with the car?" I tell the same thing I explained on this thread. Then he tells me, "Well I just drove the car there is nothing wrong it, no noises, pulls hard, nothing is wrong." I couldn't say anything. On my driveway, would not go on gear, rolls freely though. I'm puzzled, I really am.

And another update, it's not like anyone is interested but oh well lol. After driving the car for about 40 miles, 3rd gear grinds like a you know what, 4th gear grinds and won't stay engaged and pops out. The resolution is that we are trying to locate a new gearbox to be put in. I could take the current box out and take it somewhere to get rebuilt, but then again, I don't have time for that and seems like it will be cheaper to get a new one put in, rebuild and sell the old one. I already have an ad on the garage sale but if you know anyone with an 06 or 07 gearbox, hit me up.

not many of us have spares, if Allpro doesn't have one then Weavers or LKQ might be your best bet

I don't remember the link but there is a Facebook group that posts gar parts and such all the time. There always seems to be wrecked cars that people are looking to part out. There is a post I put on WRXAtlanta's facebook group page about a bumper that has a link to the Facebook parts page. I'm at work on the work computer so I cannot get onto Facebook.

call allpro don't pay for a rebuild. If they don't have one I'd get one on ebay before paying 1500+ for a rebuild. Could always do a 6mt swap.
either way take it to allpro, you and your wallet will be happy.

I already did a while ago, they and I both are trying to locate a new tranny, but after that I still need to rebuild this because I can't sell a broken tranny and I would just have junk laying around. 6 speed swap is out of the question though, too much work and too much time, oh and did I mention money. lol

Thanks everyone for the input, have to look at those links on facebook, maybe I will get lucky.

Edit: I did not get lucky.

Anyone have any idea what is a fair price for tranny? I know it really depends how bad you want one, but I was quoted 1600 for one, it sounds kinda high to me. 60k miles on it, so possibly it would need a rebuild soon too.

I've sold good ones for 1000 and 800 years ago and a RA gearset 5mt for 2K so I would assume that same range or less unless all the spares have run out.

Search craigslist in the SE and look for someone with a burnt up engine parting out.

Maybe it's the inflation lol. All on-line parts places quotes I have are from 1600(broken) up to 3000 for a rebuilt one. I found one on sale by private individual for an asking price of 1000, fully working no grinds, at least that's what they say but you can never be sure, trying to negotiate the price as we speak. What I'm gonna do is put the new one in, get the broken one rebuilt to top spec and put that back in and sell the replacement.

If all you have is synchro grinding now try uncle Scotty's transmission cocktail. It solved all of my issues

And I've been told -06 they changed to pull type, only STI's had pull type before that. lol

They do not rebuild. Also maybe they are just too busy, I've been calling a few times after I picked my car up, just to inquire if they found a replacement and when I could drop off my vehicle, they always say they will give me a call back but it never happens. I saw a thousand cars in their backyard so I take it they are too busy.

Ok so I locked a deal on new trans and should have it by next week, can't wait to put it on and wait for something else to break. Hopefully it will be something more minor. :)

This story is about the get a happy ending, like mentioned before I got a killer deal on a trans that has 96k miles on it, rear diff(just to be safe, if my current really has 07 internals), brand new south bend clutch and a lightweight flywheel and they are getting installed next week.

    Jpeg. or it didn't happen

Now just waiting for the engine to blow up, I know there has to be something coming down the pipe.

Today picked up the car from Allpro with all the stuff installed. Wow, what a difference, first of all instead of the ACT clutch I had the Southbend one feels so smooth and easy, lighter flywheel made a bigger difference what I expected, this thing revs fast and I mean fast compared to OEM. Transmission feels like a brand new one. Also Allpro was awesome, dropped it off after hours, they said it would be ready monday but instead I got a call on saturday that it is ready, that is fast, very affordable and overall great service and they really seem to know these cars well.

It's always a crapshoot buying something used...especially something as critical as a transmission....glad to hear it worked out for you!

It sure is, I bought it from an active member on this board so that made me feel easier about it. This is a great forum with great folks, glad I found it.
