Anomaly?

    I was taking a left out of a side street coming out of first from a stand still. Gave it a decent amount of gas and brought it to about 6K before shifting. It was a sunny day and in the review mirror I saw a BIG, big cloud of blue smoke. I got the bad ring shiver down my spine......I have tried to recreate it since and have not been able to. Oil looks OK. Is this a Subaru trait? Once in a blue moon blasting out a big carbon buildup cloud?:dunno

    Just a guess, but was the engine cold?

    Pretty much, it had about 3 minutes idle time after sitting for an hour.

    When the motor is cold I know my car emits more smoke than you'd think would be normal, but it apparently is normal, as the cats need some heat in them to begin working properly.

    That said, don't drive like that when your car isn't fully up to temp. But I'm sure you know that.

    Yeah I'm usually pretty good due to glass tranny. I never launch hard keep an even acceleration but I do take it into the higher rpm's.

    That's not entirely what he ment. Recently someone threw a rod after not allowing the engine to come up to proper temps and high revving.

    I'm sure the cloud was just your turbo at full throttle, I've noticed mine does it after the car has been parked for awhile or it's the first WOT after putting around granny style.

    Shouldn't be anything to worry about, but try not to push the car until the temp gauge is at proper levels.

    Also depending on the oil you're using, the some lubricants take longer to provide the protection they're designed to exhibit. Synthetics protect quicker in most cases...something around 10 mins of the engine running from full cold. Where as traditional (mineral based) oil's take longer to get hot and begin protecting.

    So yeah just take it real easy when the car is cold...it's a PITA but worth it!

    Yeah I am running Amsoil, decent synthetic. Very good advice. I woudl rather be careful than throw a rod especially with my first planned mods coming up ASAP.
