I know there are a few threads like this on here, but I have a couple questions that I hope you guys won't flame me for asking...:hsugh:

My driver side front outer boot is leaking and now when I turn sharp I hear a scrape/clicking sound. From what I have read, it is time for a new axle instead of just the boot.

I am leaning toward just going for a Subaru axle, but have read the the EMPI axles are good as well. TiC says they use them on their race car.

So, what kind of axle do you guys recommend?

Also, I will be changing the axle out, and am not sure, but when I pull the axle, will I need to put in new transmission fluid as well? Will it all leak out from the opening where the axle was connected?

I am going with an OEM.

So, I guess that the transmission fluid will come out of the opening, but was told that if i jack up the driver side pretty high, only a little bit will come out.

Can anybody tell me if this will work?

Also, is there anything that will catch me by surprise if I am not ready for it when I am swapping the axles?

not that much fluid will leak out. plus that side will be jacked up anyway (no need to jack up both sides)

and no it's pretty damn easy.

So I should catch the fluid that does leak out and put it back in correct?

    Thanks for the help too.

easy a bolt, a pin, turn the wheel, pull the inside off, may need a dead blow to get out of the hub, install new one with new axle nut... dumbass

It should only take 30 minutes to do this job. I had zero come out of my tranny when I replaced my passenger side.

Keep up with the history and you'll understand that yes, it was necessary. Lay off the PC koolaid, it's making you less of a man. Now both of you go buy some Old Spice deodorant and man up.

$70 (after turning in core) at your local O'Riley's Auto Parts store, life time warranty on them. I replaced mine in 07, it has seen good use on it and still holding well. It clicks, i'll go right back and get another new one for free :).

I had a torn boot on my 04 STi and the dealer wanted $300 or something for a new axle.

I got mine at Advanced Auto Parts for $80, in stock too, lifetime warranty, no core.

did mine to replace the outer and inner boot on Friday.. (inner one tore, replaced the outer one just cause it was there) Not a drop leaked when we had it jacked up. Stupidest thing was those boot bands...

I'll let you all in on a secret. Subaru OEM Re-manufactured axles are actually new units.

OK. I am stuck. I cant seem to find a way to get the axle out of the transmission? I have tugged on it and tried to pry it and everything, but it won't come out...

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

No problem, I would keep an I on it for the first couple days to see if it moves off the axle stub.

    Thanks for the help.
