My birthday is in March, and I was thinking since I can't get my hands on any tophats, I might as well see what I can get in the coilover department.

Definitely used coilovers. I am not very pick when it comes to how stiff the ride is since I come from an off-road truck background.

What can I get for around $500-$700?

For $500 to $700 I don't think you are going to find much in the Coilover department. Maybe, if you are ultra lucky, but I think on average, Coilovers sell for closer to $1,000.

For under $500, you could get 4 new KYB Adjustable Struts which would be a vast improvement over stock, but not quite Coilovers.

It can happen, but you will have to be patient. Sparta got a set for 500 recently.

I'd save your money rather than buy KYBs, people have put them on shock dynos and determined that they pretty much don't have any difference between settings. Save your money and buy some konis.

why are you giving up on the tophats? For your price range I would stay there. A quick search on nabisco yielded some good results

FS: NJ/PA/LI OEM 04 STi Struts, Springs, Tophats.

FS: 04 STI Struts, tophats, boots, nuts, etc. Motorsport ALK & 08+ steering bushings

FS (SoCal): 2005 STI Suspension - Struts, Springs, Tophats

Keep looking around, just don't expect to get them overnight unless you're willing to drop the cash. For your budget, I would say keep looking until you find a good deal, as they are out there, especially w/ people hurting for money. Unless your car is stuck on the side of the road and you need these to get it home, shop smart and you can come up big ;)

I'm still going to try and find some tophats. I was just curious if I ever wanted some coilovers, what I could get in my price range.
