This is on a 2004 Scion but I figured someone here might know. When you let off the gas and coast in gear, out of gear, clutch in or clutch out, the car makes a speed dependent clicking sound. On throttle it does not make any noise. It also does not make any noise when turning full lock either way. I have checked the wheel bearings and they seem ok. The cv boots are still in good shape so there is nothing obvious there. Anybody have any other ideas or suggestions?
First thought is something in the diff. Maybe something happened to the ring gear or pinion on the decel side.
i was thinking diff. thats what my front diff did in the WRX when it was busted. not sure on a Scion tho. maybe put the front on jackstands and put it in gear and see if both wheels spin....??
axle may be busted, even if the boots are in tact. just an audible clicking or can you feel it in the steering? if it doesn't change while steering, check the join nearest the transmission could be a worn out ring gear in the differential on the coast side of the teeth (convex side of the gear teeth)
I am going to check the brake pads even though it still makes the noise even when I'm on the pedal. I guess while I'm checking the brakes I might as well pull the axles. There is no feed back in the steering wheel when it is clicking.
It only does it on decel so I doubt its a nail in the tire but I'll check all the easy stuff before I start pulling axles. I sounds exactly like a stick in the spokes.
A buddy of mine who had the same issue once, it ended up being a chipped tooth on a gear. You siad it only happens while in gear right? Is it specific to a gear? Might be final drive too. Does it do it in reverse? Hope this helps.

Any idea how to determine which one? I got under the car and looked but they both looked ok and I couldn't recreate the noise by spinning the wheels. I really don't want to buy two axles. That cuts into the money I need to get my car back on the road.
Does it do it while you roll the car? In other words can you roll the car down the driveway and hear the noise? Or does it need to get some speed to do it?
Well I was just trying to see if you could roll the car and hear it allowing you to determine which side it was coming from.
