I have understood that the coolant additive was to stop/help find small leaks in the system. And why not put water in an aluminum radiator? I would not think twice about it :)

while we're on the subject, apparently you're not supposed to put ANY water in an aluminum radiator? o_O

Err...since when? Even the factory service manual tells you to put 50/50 with Distilled Water.

Its not just coolant:) If you look at your coolant, it is much darker than Prestone or any other off the shelf coolant. Something about special additives or something. Talk to WJM about it. WHy risk it for a measily $10.

I have and didn't think twice about it. there is a GIGANTIC thread on nasioc about this
    edit: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=504002

they talk about some of the additives of various coolants and which are safe to use. Unabomber is kind of a dipshit sometimes (he's a sonar technician what can I say) but there's a lot of good information in there.

edit2: actually I've met him he's not that bad of a guy. except I bought a monitor from him that died 8 months later :unamused:

Thanks. I think I can tackle this now. I have been putting it off for so long. I will just premix 50/50 (with a little pee :naughty:) and then add it. I did buy the Subaru coolant from SOG.

Any other advice to make sure I get all the fluid out when I drain it??? I will have all the time in the world to do it so I don't mind letting it come out the little drain hole. Need to replace thermostat? One other question, where do you dispose the old stuff?

Sorry I haven't been around much, working 4 10 hour days is nice but the day off I just veg out and do nothing. I still need to do some other maintenance so you will be hearing from me again.

best way if you can manage it is just yank off the lower radiator hose and let er rip. the drain petcock is a piece of shit.

you can try a local auto parts place to collect it, but most won't. try calling your local city/county gov't and see if they have somewhere to dispose of it. or if you don't really give a shit just pour it down the drain

Collect it in oil drain pan. Dispose of it at a recycling center.

You could probably just take it somewhere like a valvoline or a jiffylube. They take old oil, I wouldnt see why they wouldn't let you get rid of some coolant.

I buried mine in the back yard:)

I would change the thermostat while you have the coolant drained. It will take you an additional 10 minutes.

i wont recommend it but i know of a few usage for the coolant
not good if you have pets around the house or kids
the used coolant has heavy metals in it so i would also be careful when working with it

the only one i've found so far are rated at 160F, not sure if these will overcool plus an upgraded radiator

anyone know what is the coolant temp range for OEM with no FMIC blocking the radiator? Looked everywhere and havent found the info yet

Can you really overcool an engine? I wouldn't think twice about getting the 160 degree thermostat and putting it on a stcok car in the SOUTH.

I would get one from the Subaru dealer or an aftermarket one like the gimmick motorsports.
