when i put it in 4th, i get like a little crunch noise (not grinding)... may be the synchro is worn out? and what can i do to make the gears a little bit smoother to shift? the guy i know that owns a car repair place says it's because subaru uses gated trannys instead of H-matics? i dont know

Use penzoil's synchromesh. Its a parafin based oil that is supposed to allow your shifting to be much smoother. I picked up a quart from amazon.com. I am going to drain about 1 quart of oil, and fill it back up with the synchromesh.

I did something very similar to uncle scottys cocktail and it fixed my problem which was a grind/crunch from 3-4 and 4-5. I think the syncro mesh is the key ingredient. The problem was fixed immediately. I would try that first.

How do you drain the fluid for this?
