I normally have never liked the 'seperated' sound i've heard in previous component speaker installs. The oem is an exception, tho, because the tweeter in the door is so quiet, I can cover it with my hand and not notice a big difference. well, post an opinion or just vote if you like...
I voted for in the door, but ive also seen some setup on the a-pillars. I'm sure its really up to how exactly you prefer your music to sound. On that note, the stock tweeter mount in the door is in a shitty position, I moved mine over some when I did my audio.
Ideally you want the tweeter within 8 inches of the woofer. I just found out that I have the premium stock components up front, when I do speakers I'm just going to glue the tweeter to the stock tweeter mounting brackets.

try and find ceramic cone tweeters. they'll last the loudest highs, like Tool. i bought regular tweeters and blew them in one song. the ceramic cone is ideal for heat, like our summers here, and you can load them up with power. infinity makes some of the best tweeters, and i think kenwood is the best sound for the all mighty dollar.
How do you blow up tweeters? They're specialized for high frequency, the only way I can see blowing them would be trying to play low tones through them or overpowering them. Most tweeters cant handle much power at all (~25 watts RMS is average from my rusty memory). If you've got a head unit that supports it you could go crazy and wire up the front speaker channels to the tweeters, rear channels to the midrange woofers, and sub channels to the subwoofer for a very balanced and incredibly adjustable setup. Only problem is that you lose your rear speakers, well that really isnt a problem at all.
I'd put the tweets wherever you can get them aimed at you. They're pretty directional. woofer's not so much. haven't investigated this yet in the wrx...though i do have an extra set of components in my room.
well, overwhelmingly everyone seems to think a straight replacement is the way to go. thanks fer voting. I guess i'll try that... now, how to chose between the 3 i like...
i just bought an infinity component set. i plan on installing them this weekend. ill let you know how they turn out.
the kenwood factory outlet is a great place to go searching. real cheap. i've bought the last 2 radios i've owned there. spaghetti junction, on the 85 north access road. my excelon 6.5" are fantastic. 2¢
superdude, i checked that place out this past weekend on SUnday and they only had 1 Excelon unit with 6.5" that had 5v outlet. They had several other normal Kenwood units with 2v pre-amp outs. Bleh to that. Guess my stereo in the car will have to make do for a while cause performance and suspension comes first and I'm kind of an audio-phile to settle for cheap setup. That unit was around $1100.
Okay, I ordered the component speakers I wanted from a guy on ebay who said they were new. Good price too... ...but they aren't new... obviously opened. I'll be plugging them in to test them on my homeunit before* installing them in the car. *putting a stop on the paypal account
they seem to work okay. Gonna try to install them friday. ...wish I had some sound mat stuff while i'm going to have the door apart...
