When I am in a low gear and let off the gas sometime its sounds like the differential makes a knock when the power is shifted forward to the engine. Is this normal or do I have a developing problem, the car drives fine and I don't notice any problems other than the sound, I bought it used and its always sounded that way. The dealer looked at it, but said there was no problem, but I wasn't sure if they just didn't want to fix it. Thanks for any advice.

The diff makes a knock? Like it is hitting something under the car or the noise is coming from that area?

The rear diff makes noise, its notorious in 2nd gear. You could look at TiCs clunk killer bushing set. We're 04 owners, we got the short end of the stick on everything ;)

on sti you hear the brake pads setting into place when you go from reverse to first or first to reverse, is that maybe what you are hearing.

If you've got an aftermarket CAI, check that its tightened to the fender, mine came loose and made a clunking sound whenever the engine shifted around. Could be strut clunk even though thats much more often in the rear struts.
