Does ceramic coating make exhaust piping on the outside any cooler does it only help retain heat inside?

Is there ANYTHING that helps exhaust piping stay cooler on the exterior besides header wrap?

I'm wondering if this will work? I'm gonna header wrap the header pipes on my RC51 but I want to put SOMETHING on the muffler. I burnt the piss out my leg the other day on by accident when I was loading the bike in the shed. Plus stealthing it out in black would look sick on it too.

adds really nice flames off throttle, wish I had video of the CB400 before I sold it. Didn't wrap them though as they are mild steel coated inside and out. After the third burn you'll know how to handle your bike.

    What adds nice flames?

Yeah I have a nasty third degree burn on my leg the size of a silver dollar....maybe bigger. I need a bigger shed.....it's crowded in there and having exhast on both sides doesn't help! I need to get rid of some JUNK in the shed.....lol.

I don't know much about this other than the fact that after I wrapped my downpipe I could put my hand "near" it after a hard run.

Well I don't want to header wrap the canister on the bike :) That would just be ugly.

I dont think that will help all that much with exterior heat. Youw ill probably have to wrap it still. My headers are ceramic coated and I wouldnt touch them after a hard run. My turbo with the blanket on is a different story.

Yeah mine were too and I wouldn't dare even do a 'fast' touch on them even after running for a while.

Guess I'll just have to be more careful when putting the bike up.

Time to plan another project......lean to on the shed so I can move some crap out. Heck I may even turn this into a new shed project that allows me to pull the car in and work on it. Would be a fun project and would allow me to put this 3 trailer fulls of lumber to use!

Don't worry it will happen again, burned the back of my arm checking front air pressure one morning while the bike warmed up. Needless to say I jumped up and knocked the bike over. Could be worse, my uncle who has ridden incident free for over thirty years broke his ankle by forgetting to put the kick stand down. Made it two steps before the trunk on his geezer-glide caught him. Stupid shit happens for a reason.

Yup. I never burned myself on the CBR600 or the 2 Harleys. Yet this one got me GOOD.

the ceramic coating on the inside of the tube traps the heat, off throttle that unburned fuel ignites even better that's all.

i wrapped the headers on my buell. its a must if you ask me for harley/buells. some guys would rather just risk it. granted they are still hot as hell, but riding thru traffic they are significantly less hot.

after i wrapped them i taped everything off and high temp painted the wrap

Too bad you're not rocking a cafe racer style, then the wrapped pipes would work beautifully :)

@Alex....I like the look. I just like going very fast, handling like a dream, and virtually knee scrubbing every turn I can.

My bike has VERY little header pipe showing unlike the Buells and others.....

Have you considered a heat shield? [IMG]

The FMF one is designed for header pipes on four stroke MX bikes, but the concept is the same.

Be surprised what a fork swap, shocks and a steering dampener will do for those old bikes. Alex, the tail section on my old CB400 was copied from an "airhead"

And now for my rant on the lack of ROI from NASA. Tang is great and all but why the hell hasn't somebody come out with shuttle tiles for your exhaust? Who here ever saw the little demonstration at Kennedy Space Center with the blow torch and the cube?

The guy would pick a volunteer from the crowd. He would hold this white cube with a pair of tongs and get it glowing red with the torch. Then he would take the cube with his bare hand and pass it to the volunteer. It was a demonstration of the heat shields from the shuttle. Keep in mind the first shuttle launch was a week after this so it was a while back.

$texas.....looking for cheaper alternatives. Looking like I'm just gonna have to live with it and just be more careful loading it back in the shed :wiggle:

i keep mine in the garage at home and a covered carport at a friends place during the week. i'm always mindful to push from the non-header side. unfortunately you have dual exhaust. however that my be a solution. find a single sided exhaust for your bike. i park next to an older RC51 on campus that has single exhaust. hell, you could just take one muffler off. jason did that on his GSXR1000 until he bought a proper exhaust.

Single side header on RC51 KILLS the powerband.

Swain coat...it's white or yellow, ugly and thick but does a great job of keep heat from disipating. They do it up in NY, IIRC.
