I've been cruising various mud flap threads on Club and Nabisco, looking at some offerings and I wanted to ask other people's opinion(thinking about getting some).

I notice that 90% of the ones installed are sticking out further than the wheel, and usually by a good 2 inches. I happen to think that looks kind of sloppy unless you're running a widebody kit. I mean, pickup trucks flaps don't stick out that far.

does anyone else agree or have an opinion? or am I missing the point?

I think you are missing the point a little bit. If you look at the wrx body shape towards the bottom, it tapers back in while the tire sticks out. So in order for the mudflaps to catch everything, it needs to stick out enough to not just enough be aligned with the tire but also a little extra just to be sure.

I **hope** to be installing some mud flaps very soon.
When I do, I will be looking for the extra flappage :keke: on the side.

It's exactly as Steve mentions above, the taper in the body leaves area of the tire that will throw mud/dirt up on the body

Check out the Prodrive mudflaps, they look really good and dont flare out like you're talking about. They're very rare but they look amazing.

The old style Prodrive flaps are no longer made and would not fit his 04 anyway.

The new Prodrive flaps are like all the others he is mentioning.

I am going to get another set of Rally Armor flaps. www.rallyarmor.com

They stick out for a reason. If you want them to do their job they have to stick out some.

Mud flaps are just something to keep crap off your car and make it look more like the rally car based car it is.

I run fastlines (which do stick out, they're proper rally flaps) and they're excellent.

Found this posted on NASIOC... he seemed like a really nice, honest guy when I talked to him so I'd say it's likely not a BS attempt.

I also just realised I posted in wheels when I was aiming for Exterior. oops.

But my point is, mud flaps on tractors and on pickup trucks don't stick out to the degree that these flaps do on all the pics i'm seeing on WRXs. Are we all saying they somehow less effective and pointless because of that?

Because to me without the flared fenders of a widebody to cover that, it just looks piecemeal and cluttered to have it sticking out like that...

also.... not interested in spending $100 if I can fabricate my own with a template. Someone said there's a good template over at scoobymods...

I agree with you TJ. I think it looks off. I understand the function of them sticking out, but I don't really plan to do much that would really put them to use. If I were to do mud flaps, it would be primarily from an asthetics(sp?) point of view. Since that is my case, I like the Rallyperformance mud flaps.

Only problem, and I hope to god that they fixed it by now, is Rallyperformances issues with Customer Service. Nothing worse than ordering something from them, having to wait over 5 months for delivery, and during that time, not being able to contact the company (Rallyperformance) for status updates on my order. I ended up having to look up the owner in the phonebook, and call him on his home phone.

sorry you had customer no-service... I mostly just dont like their name on the thing. I like it plain.

but i think it would still be fuctional for water and light mud. But if i was serious rally-x i would be able to legitimise it in my head. :)

I dont know about you guys, but if you run a rim that is flush if not more so with the fenders as I do, you will throw all sorts of crap on the body. And all I do is drive in downtown Atlanta  Ive considered making them, ordering them, etc, but it all boils down to just not having the time lately to do it. Eager to see what you all produce :)

Oh, perhaps this is another task for 10th St :D

OEM mud flaps FTW. I don't plan to ever off road my car so those truck driver flaps are pointless.

I don't see any Rallyperformance on the flaps. My issue was with my muffler shipped from the UK. It got stuck in customs for about 2 1/2 months. The mud flaps are made locally, well within the US, so I doubt there would be any major shipping issues with that. That should arrive within 2 to 3 weeks at most.

I still thing they were trying to smuggle cocaine in my muffler, and that is why customs had it for so long.

Hey Kanchou- Come to the Varsity tonight and check out my Rally Armors. They stick out and I didn't think I'd like it, but when you see it in person you'll love it. I get more comments on how kick ass my mud flaps are than anything else. Look for the only Sonic yellow WRX there. :naughty:

personally, if I never plan on doing some serious rally cross, I'm never going to get mudflaps. I would rather have mud and rockchips beind my wheels than those mudflaps. But then again, I've had my car for over 3 years now and I don't think I have a single rock chip back there, and I'd done my fair share of spirited gravel road driving before. Just my .02.
