Ok so I know there's a bunch of savy computer guys on here so I have a noob question:

I have a Mac and my roommate has a PC....The cable internet is hooked up to his PC, in the living room, and I want to wirelessly run the internet in another room on my Mac....How do I go about doing such?....I have a wireless router but it's only for the PC (i think, i just borrowed it today)...I won't be moving in my computer for another week but wanted some feedback as to what would be the best course of action...Thanks!!! :sx:

Use the router before his PC. configure its Access Point, put a key to secure it, make it broadcast the SSID. Then on your MAC, use the built-in network tool to find the SSID and then put the key in connect.

If you don't live too far I could help some weekend.

Cool, thanks man...some of that was a little over my head but I'll try to decipher what you said and give it a go....unfortunately I live kinda far...Duluth area...

Ok...another question....Do I need any software/hardware to connect to the router from the Mac?....wirelessly....that's where I'm getting lost...or is it a IP finding kinda thing

The router isnt only for PC or whatever. There is an option in the airport config iirc that allows you to deal with PC garbage ;)

But basically plug your modem into your wireless router. Log into the router, configure it, secure it and then input the wireless settings into your laptop. You should have zero connection issues.

(Its been a few months since Ive used my mac -- gave it to my brother).

Here's what I'm thinking definitely correct me if I'm wrong....the router is gonna take my cable connection and transmit it's own IP to connect to the cable line....I just need something in my Mac to recognize that signal...?

Right, if your MAC doesn't have a wireless card (either built in or the add on you posted above) then you will need to get one.

if it doesn't have a wireless built-in, instead of the $$$ airport, you can get a DLINK DWL-G122 B1, it's much cheaper :) i got one from fry's for $10 after rebate, make sure it's rev.B1, other rev don't work, gl,

The router will need to be a cable modem router or, if it isn't, connect the stand alone cable modem to the router. Then connect the PC to the router. Turn on the routers wifi, as stated above, and then your MAC will see it, if it has wifi hardare built-in. wifi is an open standard. There is nothing funky with it in terms of PCs or MACs. They all work together. I have 5 computers at my house. One desktop PC, two laptop PCs, one deskop MADC and one laptop MAC. They are all connected to my LAN and can all share files with each other.

Here is a great link to learn how to setup your home network. Click me
