If I remember it right, you're a road cyclist -- do you use a roof rack or a hitch? I didn't see it covered on your site.

Alex, I think he told me he puts them on the car. Benefits of having a wagon besides looking really cool.

I never keep any of my bikes external of the car if possible - there is significantly more benefits having it in the wagon. thats why i got a wagon (minimum requirement is fold down seats /usable space) otherwise i would have got an sti in 2005

You drive your roof rack into your garage or something? :)

I agree with Ming. Just the added stress on the headset fork plus teh fact of the bike being in the elements. When you have bikes that cost as much as the ones Ming and I are carrying, you would probably protect it as much as possible too:)

question is, did you finish the swap?

As for bike carriers, well I've used all the styles. My favorite was the Rhodes Euroshuttle. Perfect for roadies who worry about aero and drive thru windows at Starbucks. It's a shame that style is no longer made.

    drawbacks of carrying bikes externally
    Roofracks
    1. run into over hangs (garage , drive thru, carports,..)
    2. bike forks chain stays will get hit first - causes chips and potentially worst damage. Our cars can achieve higher speeds than the bikes will ever see.
    3. locking the fork will cause a lot of load to the Headset of the bikes during maneuvering of the car. i would recommend a body clamp instead but then again marks on our bikes
    4. If it rains during the travel the bike will definately get all kind of fluid in crevices that is almost impossible to get out

    rear trailer hitch mounts
1.If you ever drive down a dusty road you can see vortex full of dust behind our cars and that means your well lubed components are no longer lubed but coverd by layers of dust which in turns acts as sandpaper on your aluminum cranks and cass.
    2. Pray the guy behind you stops when you are stationary

Yeah, I understand the drawbacks of either style. I was going to get a Whisperbar roof rack for the STI but that plans a changing soon enough and I should be able to store a bike inside the new car without a problem.

The reason why I would prefer to have a trailer hitch mount.
