Is the front sway bar on the STi compatible with the WRX? Someone I know is giving it away for free and it would be a nice upgrade from the tiny WRX sway bar. I am not sure if the STi is an 04 or 05, but probably an 05 since he got it with 15k on it. My WRX is definitely an 03 though. Thanks, Tom
I think it should fit, I cant remember reading anything where it wont. Its the wagons which cannot take any STi sways.
So I have heard differing opinions on the effect of a larger sway bar. I have heard that it can increase understeer. I have also heard that it drastically improves the handling characteristics of the STi. Whats the case for the WRX?
We put a 32mm Strano (addco) hollow sway bar on my wife's STi, and it reduced the understeer of the car by quite a bit. It reduces the loss of camber, giving you more grip in the front. Running stock rear sway, due to SCCA stock restrictions. -- Brian
I am not quite sure what you mean by "reduces the loss of camber". Does this mean that if you don't have a whole lot of negative camber it makes it feel like you do?
the front of the car leans a whole lot less, leading to less camber loss in the front. We could only get -1.0 of negative camber in the front of the sti. -- Brian
Are you getting just -1 with camber bolts, plate, or both? Could the lack of camber be due to the fact that your FSB is HUGE or is this expected regardless of size?
-1 without any bolts of plates, as neither are legal for A-stock. The bar has no effect on the amount of camber the car can achieve, it just makes the car lean less when turning. -- Brian
I read on IWSTI: http://www.iwsti.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49537&highlight=sway+bar+size that the stock STi front and rear are 20mm, and the WRX front is 20mm and rear is 17mm. -- Brian
Well I guess that made my decision. There is really no reason to switch to the STi swaybar given it is the same diameter as the WRX. Thanks for the help Brian.
If you autocross a lot, get the Strano bar, 32mm hollow. It is lighter than the Whiteline X3006 bar and a lot stiffer. Price is the same also. -- Brian
Well I think I need to go for the rear first since it is a lot smaller than the front. I am just trying to locate a decently priced one. Not a lot of them for sale on the forums used, or if they are on sale they go real fast.
