Hi guys - have a newbie tire question. I am looking to buy a set of wheels from a guy that comes with tires. One of the tires has a slice in there - so useless. The others have only been used for 1500 miles. Question is if I just replace the one tire (with a new) and then mount all 4, is this bad? I have heard differently from folks. Please advise. Thank you.

I believe in the past people have seriously done damage to their differentials by running tires with significantly different tread depths... I'd ask the guy to measure the tread depth of the tires first.

If you can get the exact same tire / brand with tread depth with a max tread depth of 2/32 different that the new one you are OK. One other option is to buy the same tire and have it shaved (though you may have a hard time finding someone that can shave it).

This is exactly how I feel. Yes it can be done, but you can get 4 new tires very easily. Then you have 4 tires that you actually want and they have full tread and no holes.

not that much of a hassle...I had to do it when I got a puncture in my tire. GTE shaved the new tire in very short time (~30 minutes iirc). They told me they recommend anything over 1/32nds difference for anything w/ center diffs. Don't remember how much it was, but I remember it not being so much I was shocked

If the other tires are as new as you say... IMO you'd be throwing money away buying 4 new ones. Buy a new tire and have it shaved by GTE. I could see getting 4 new ones if the remaining tires were in bad shape, or were just a crappy tires.. but if thats not the case, 1 new shaved.

That's true, unless the new tires are still crappy and thus should be replaced with better quality tires.

    The tires are decent..

They are General Exclaim UHP.. I searched on tirerack and they received some pretty favorable ratings.

General is not really a tire brand that carries much strength within the Subaru community.

If you are looking at budget, I suggest you check out the latest Kuhmos or the Falken FK452.
