The other day when I was changing my oil, I noticed that the steering rack boot on the passenger side was torn.
Is replacing it a DIY job?
Has anyone replaced one before? If so, how difficult is it?
What parts do I need to source (other than a new boot that is)?

    Thanks in advance

It's not very hard but you should get re-aligned afterwards b/c you have to take off the outer tie rod which is the toe adjustment. You will also want to get the band clamp for the inner part of the boot.

Was there any fluid leaking? It should not be hard,If you measure the length of the tie rod end and put it back to the way it was it will make the alignment go easier and less chance for tire wear.Get the alignment checked as soon as you are done.

I didn't notice any fluid leaking.
I had panned on getting my alignment re-checked soon anyway, but this will
    just make me go sooner.

Just like on your axles, the boot is there to keep dirt and water out as well as fluid in...so you should address it sooner than later.

Even if you were not going to be getting your alignment checked...as long as you mark the threads (teflon tape works great) where the tie rod is and then just screw the rod back to that point it will not be off.

How in the crap did you manage to rip your tie rod boot???

Just mark it REALLY well and you'll be fine. I swapped racks and with a sharpie and a tape measure easily got within 1 degree of even toe.

The boot on my steering rack has been torn since 2002.

honestly, i think the last shop that did my alignment managed to rip it, at least that is the only thing i can think of.
about a month ago i replaced my front wheel bearings and then had the car realigned.
after the wheelbearing install, it was still intact.
i didn't crawl up underneath it until about 3 weeks after the alignment, so i can't really go talk to the shop about it at this point...

i have already ordered a boot, i should be getting it either this weekend or monday.
