Problem just started happening this weekend. Drove about 50+ miles up to the lake. Woke up and went to bfast and heard a whining noise. didn't think anything of it, but as i was driving home it was more noticeable.

Whining is only real noticeable in 3,4,and five ONLY ON ACCELERATION.
I dont doubt its in all gears but like i said only on accerleration in 3,4,and 5 you can really notice it.

Noise is constant and speed variable. Whine gets higher pitched as speed rises.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?? WHAT FLUID WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO DRAIN AND FILL?? ANYONE REBUILD THESE IN THE SNELLVILLE AREA??

    THANKS!!:sx:

I dont know much quite yet about these subaru things, but I do know that the 5spd trannies are very weak and the break easy. If your tranny is starting to make alot of noise, start shopping for a new one...

If the problem persists take it to Steven King at Subaru of Kennesaw or one of the Vendors here. 5 speeds are problematic. Maybe one of your diff,s

whine sounds like ring and pinion, are you sure it is not a wheel bearing?

I think you all are jumping the gun... Could be a number of things.

I'd like to know, what's the build date of your car, how many miles are on it, ever had the tranny fluid flushed, and do you have OEM shifter bushings?

are all of your tires the same? If you have a mismatched tire with considerable wear difference, a long trip and mess up the differential.

yes, positive it is coming from the front diff. had it in the air last night listening to it. the car has just under 70k on it now. the guy i bought it from, hen it had 45K on it said he had the trans and rear diff dope changed at about 40K. car is an 07/02, tires are all the same, and no shifter or bushings.
    THANKS AGAIN

I agree, could be lots of things. I know kennesaw is a drive, but well worth it to have Steven look at it.

Well check the fluid level of the transmission first. If you truly want to diagnose the problem on your own I would flush both tranny and rear diff with extra s and see what comes out (hopefully nothing).

While you're under there, inspect what you can on the underside of the car for damage (tears, etc).

noise could also be from synchros in addition to or other than the diff. but absolutely flush the fluid first. if metal bits come out then you know its time for a new tranny. if not, then go have it looked at by TeH kInG.

This noise is definitely vehicle speed related, not with engine speed?

In my case, yes, as far as I can tell.

I have sat there and revved the car to 4-5k with the car in neutral and not heard a thing

The only way to know what is wrong is taking it to a shop. Andrew, Brandon and Steven are those who I would trust and not in any particular order as they all know what they are doing. Changing the fluid now would be more or less a waste of time as the damage is done but it still would not hurt to do in just flushing out and having clean fluid. Alex is right though, it may be something stupid simple so start there.

I say dump the fluid and screen it for chunks of metal. Metal chunks are never good.

if it is speed and specific gear related it is probably bearing noice. Start with a good fluid change and see what happens.
