Yeah, what kind of clutch, stock? I have an 02 my stock clutch is still good, but 1st and reverse still and always have required the double pump depending on the weather a single or triple pump is appropriate. Hydrolic systems, seem to me, to be more barometric pressure sensitive and with Suby's you have the syncro issues as well depending on the year.

FWIW, my 03 forester did this and so does my current car. My dad used to complain about how difficult reverse was. I think the manual to the 08s even addresses it; something like "If engaging reverse is difficult, return the shift lever to the neutral position, re-engage the clutch, and try again." I remember thinking "Or you could have just fixed it....?" lol

    Gotta love Subaru.

FWIW, a lot of transmissions are like that. some companies like ford, you have to go to first first, and then to reverse. I've done that with my Subaru and it usually helps with getting it right. Does this happen all the time, or just when it's cold?

Yeah my Integra used to do that too. I think that is one of those problems that it would just be a stupid amount of $$$ to fix something that is a nuisance more than a real problem...

try putting it in second then reverse. You need to put it into second to stop the shaft in the tranny from moving.

the clutch would be the problem, if its not disengaging all the way or something along those lines.
