I remember thinking 1200 baud modems were the shiznit. Of course back then they would have been called "awesome" or "radical" depending on your age.
I still have an acoustic coupler but I used to use with a thinkpad on a payphone *whistles* I can't remember the speed of the first modem we had, but it was short lived since we switched to mac, there was nothing to connect to really
