Well it all began Friday night. I was heading home and had the cruise set to 58 mph. I am going around a curve and there is this HUGE deer just standing in my lane. I have always said I would just hit the darn deer but nope....instinct kicked in and I automatically reacted. There was no car coming ahead so I swerved into the next lane. The stupid deer runs in the same direction so I swerve again. This time I lost traction as I heard the Kumho's squeal.

It was at this point where I progressed myself into a much much better driver. Call me wierd but everything went into slow motion when I heard that first squeal. I remember distinctly talking to myself during this entire thing. First I told myself tap the brakes. This resulted in the car to kick the rear out in the other direction. Then I remember telling myself to hammer the gas to try to get the AWD to straighten out. I repeated those steps so many times. Also during the whole time I was telling myself whatever I do stay on the highway because if I hit the grass its over.

When I finally straightened the car I pulled over and a truck stopped asking if I was okay. I was breathing so heavy I couldn't answer but shook my head yeah. The guy told me I must be a heck of a driver as all he could see was my passenger doors, then my drivers door, and repeat. He also said I missed that deer by a hair.

I turned around and counted 9 (yes 9!!!!) zigzags of tire marks like this /\/\/. Sorry no pics as that was the last thing I thought of. It was foggy a little so the roads were a little damp.

Needless to say I drove home cautiously and half way there I came to the realization that I had just stepped up a notch in my driver status. I realized that when everything went into slow motion, that I had learned so much control of my car in unexpected situations. I knew how the car was supposed to react and applied that to save myself, my car, and that poor animal. It's a good Christmas. Needless to say that does not in any means mean that I am so good that I can go out and drift this thing...:wtc: .

If it wasn't for a good suspension, decent tires, and a great AWD system along with my driving experience, my butt would be on here crying about a totaled car.

    Be safe out there guys!

    glad youre ok

Glad youre ok, its weird the more and more time I spend on the track and the more slides etc... that I have, the slower things get. At some point it just becomes part of driving, it slides you correct and you dont even think about it anymore.

Glad to hear everything worked out alright and you are safe. I always said I would hit it (the deer) also until my uncle did in a HD2500 and it caused over 8K in damage. Good decision.

Yeah it happens on track all the time, the more times you spin, go off, scare the crap out of Scott etc... the more it slows down.

    Its a pretty weird

Good driving and glad to hear you're alright. It was about this time last year when I nailed a deer in my car and busted out the headlight and front bumper.

Glad you are ok man. When it comes to a deer, you want to try and avoid it. If it was a dog or a smaller animal, then don't try to avoid it, just run it down. A deer will severely f@#$ up you car if you hit it. A dog or smaller animal, not so much. You will most likely wreck trying to avoid hitting the small animal.

Although, in that situation, instinct takes over, and even if you say you will just run it down, most likely, subconsiously, your body will react to avoid running over the little guy that just ran in your path.
