i did it on my 05 sti as well and have never had any trouble. i did notice a little bit of funny tuning while it was learning for the first say 50-100 miles but after it learned everything was perfect!!! I love it :).

I've read the sound is not as loud with the "U Turn". But open in the fender seems a little scarry.

most people just take a hacksaw to their stock ones. but i would think that would negate the effect of the factory fresh air duct. but either way you are drawing in fresh air from outside the engine bay

i just took out my silencer on my 07 wrx tr 30 minutes ago, took me about 15 minutes with a friends help. I took it for a test drive and i can hear the bpv and turbo spool :ddirty: but for the elbow? idk im kinda cautious on that

I noticed my car was slower and I was running richer. I decided to put it back in, and now I can still hear the turbo.

No problems either. I like the increase in noise and you can finally hear some bov. I did use a piece of stock intake tubing I had left over from the silencer delete I did on my 2000 Nissan Frontier. That probably won't help too many people but I figured it would help seal the gap from the air box to the fender and keep from sucking in water dripping from the fender walls if any.

No problems here, and had it that way for 25k or so.

so has anyone here taken out the elbow and not replace it at all? or would that screw things up badly?

I just kept the intake scoop all the way up to the inner fender and then made a custom intake with a carbon fiber airbox

I did...it doesnt really matter to be honest with you. if you want the appropriate way to do it IMO, remove the snorkus and pipe up some air with ducting from the fog light area.

yeah I did that at first, then I put a dryer exhaust tube to connect the two. Then I realised I was getting some moisture in the tube during heavy rains, so I took it out. Also figured it was probably disruping the air flow due to the rough ridges inside.

    It will get pretty loud.

Interestingly now that I know what to listen for, it's quite noticeable to me and Im stock again.

Thats exactly what I did, I didn't notice a big difference but you can really hear it in the cabin..

I had mine like that for a while. I even took it one step further and added two pieces of 3" PVC;one 90 degree elbow and one 45 degree elbow. It ended up being pointed toward the front of the car inside the fender well, plenty high enough to not have the water intake issue. It worked great but eventually I just wanted to hear my turbo more and decided to install a K&N typhoon. So far I have had nothing but good results, both in my ears and in my arse. I personally am sold.
