HOLLY CRAP THIS FRIKIN THING IS FAST...... We are running out of things to chase, we have found the perfect suspension setup. We are headed to the track now, Ill update tommrow. Looks like we are going to be able to get the car into the 1:18s. Ask Scott, Actually Ill just let Scott chime in and explain. the car turns in like a corvette, its neutral through the corners and you can rotate the car on throttle, it does things other STIs can only dream of. I fully plan to be in the 30s at Road A in March. Matt
KWs are good, but we have put together a setup that is just amazing. Its not cheap but man does it work.
We. Have. Found. It. Seriously, the way the car handled today was DRAMATICALLY unlike any Subaru I have ever driven. Setup: KW V3. Standard spring rates. One turn from stiff compression. One and a half rebound. PDE front plates, stock rear top-hats. Whiteline 27-29 front sway, stiff setting Whiteline 22-26 rear sway, middle setting Whiteline ALK Carlab X-Brace in the back, M-1 chromoly subframe brace, no front strut bar. 2.6 degrees front camber, 0.1 degrees front toe-out. 1.6 degrees rear camber, 0.01 degrees rear toe-in. Stoptech 335 BBK PFC-01 Brake pads front, Carbotech XP8 rear Race Comp Engineering Brake Ducts Goodyear GSCS DOT tires. 36 psi hot front 34 psi hot rear. Sparco Pro 2000 Race seat. Kartboy Short shifter I have driven over 400 Subaru’s in the last 3 years. None feels ANYTHING like this car. Every other Subaru I have driven requires a bit of “man-handling” or “making it turn.” This car steers like a Vette, or a Miata. Fingertips guide the front end where to go, throttle easily controls the attitude of the car. I think I need to credit a lot of this to the M-1 front subframe brace. It does make sense that the massive loading of the lower-control-arms into to what appears to be a flexible area could contribute to the comparatively poor steering feel in most Subaru’s. SS
It's a HUGE difference. The steering is 4 times as communicative, and is giving 10 times the control. Even well prepared STi's that I've driven always feel like you need to "make/force/wrestle" them into the turn, and then you can drive it hard off the corner. It usually feels like you have to get the car setup, because mid-corner adjustments to the steering wheel don't really do much... Usually once you are on the throttle it will push if you try and add steering input. If the front washes too much you have to lift off the throttle to get it turn-in a bit more, which of course kills the momentum. With this setup, there might be a moment of push while transitioning from trail-braking to rolling on the throttle, but once you get on the throttle, the car will actually tighten the line. You can be rolling into the throttle, and if necessary even get the front to point in a bit more. It allows getting on the throttle harder and earlier, and still having control over the front end while on throttle. It is FANTASTIC. SS
The rear of the car feels much more composed, it feels planted and solid, once the new linear rate springs get here we are switching to cusco camber plates in the back which should make it feel even better. Brian I can assure you that I will be in the 1:39s with no problem at Road A next time, the car points so well and is so controllable, that you feel no need to slide the car around. Its freaking magic.
Nice, I just talked to a friend of mine said this last friday a GT2 went 1.084 and his 993 went 1.149. Says the new surface is 1-2 seconds faster than before, can't wait to get my car out there. Hoping for low 1.13's
Don't take this the wrong way but its not going to happen. Porsche Cup cars don't run that fast there.
I have no doubts the car will run 1.13's. Last year we went 1.189 with a 3400lb car that made 420hp. The new car makes allitle more power but is 800lbs lighter. The track is now 1-2 seconds quicker with the new surface, hell a 993 that is mildly setup ran 1.149 just this friday. That car makes around 450hp and weighs in just under 3000lbs. If I don't run 1.13's I will be upset. 997 cup car. Run's 1.10's at roebling (2500lbs 420whp) Older Turbo 993 GT2 Ran 1.084 (2500lbs 550hp)
The Sports 2000 racecar that weighs 850 lbs and makes near 200 hp ran a 1:19 this weekend. We were on track every White, Black, and Red session (intermediate, advanced, and instructor) and did not see ANYTHING other than a Winston Cup car and the Sports 2000 running under 1:20... The Sports Racer Track record there was 1:12 for YEARS... The Toyota Atlantic track record there is something like a 1:08... If your car goes 1:13, I'll pay $200 for a ride in it SS
I have a $1000 dollars that says you won't run a 1:13 and honestly youre buddy who says he went 1:14.9 in a mildly setup 993 is either dellusional or a liar. The new surface is not really that much faster in a STI, the old surface had plenty of grip for an awd car, mind you I'm not saying its not faster but its not 2 seconds faster.
Mr. Keen is a hell of a driver, A full out racecar being able to turn a 1:13 is a little diffrent than a street car turning a 1;14
I am going to leave this thread, as I don't want to bring anymore drama to WRXATL. But no offense anything slower than a 1.18 in a streetcar is SLOW.
the car actualy did a 15.5 with a passenger.... Doug was told the car went a lil faster by someone els that didnt exactly know what they were talking about ... i was there... and saw the car do 2 15.5s in a row.. with a passanger.. with Cory driving it... without passenger and cory driving a lil harder.. it would do 14s... the car was on dunlop slicks.. but is definalty a street car... if it was my car.. i would drive it everyday... its a very nice street car tho... 3300 pounds.. 450hp... the new pavement is awsome... very fast...
My STI and Ron Fridays Supra, I'm pretty sure we were under 1:19 the last session but I wouldnt swear by it, I didnt have a stop watch on it. If I had known you were down there I would have come down on Friday and let you drive the STI. <Big Baller Matt
I have plenty more time to pick up, I'm still feeling out the new setup on the car. I'm not trying to cause drama. Saying you are going to run a 1:13 is one thing if you are LEH KEEN but sub 1:18 is fast. Just out of Curiosity whats the fastest everyone here has ran at Roebling. Leh Doug, whats the fastest you have ran.
Honestly I have never driven at Roebling, I am an ok driver but by no means am I as good as Luke. Thats why Luke drives and I handle the rest.
So you have never driven Roebling, but you are going to go 1:13 and you are telling me that anything over 1;18 is slow. LOL
Yes, Luke will be our driver for this year. It is very common for people to source outside drivers to drive their cars. I do plan on driving my car some but for the big events Luke will be driving. Yes in my opion anything over 1.18 is slow. If we could run a 1.189 in a fp green'd sti that had a set of off the shelf Tein Flexs and weighted 3400lbs with a driver. Then a purpose built car with less weight and more power should easily run quicker times. FWIW, just got off the phone with one of our sponsored customers that raced his evo last year. Said his car on his pumpgas map 330hp ran a 1.191 and his racegas map 420hp ran 1.178 this was on the new surface at Roebling.
Granted the conversation is still centered amongst Matt's original Roebling post, please try and keep this arms race to a pleasant conversation.
i agree with alex i can't tell if this thread is going downhill or not... please keep all competition related drama at the track and off this board... moderators will be watching closely
I cant wait to see how One Lap turns out this year with both premier Atlanta tuners running head to head.
I'm looking foward to getting back on Road Atlanta, now that the car does what you tell it too, it should be fun. Matt
We left our camera at my house. Ron had a camera in his Supra and we had an awesome cat and mouse session at the end of the day but the camera turned off after my warm up lap. Ill have the camera in the car from now on. The last session of the day was the most fun I have ever had on track it was 9 to 10 laps of sick speeds, there were only about 7 or 8 cars on track and we had made the passes on most people by the time they got their arms out the window to give us a point by.
Rons car is pretty stiffly sprung, I suspect something with memory instead of a dvd-r would be better
