Have you been thinking about participation in one of the many motor sport events offered by our chapter of the BMWCCA but were intimidated by the unknown? Or do you wish to just improve your day to day driving skills, or the skills of a younger driver in your house? Would you like to understand the how to better control your car in an emergency situation? Maybe you would like to explore the limits of your car's handling in a safe controlled environment. Our Car Control School may be for you!

This school is targeted for drivers with little or no high speed or autocross experience. This school is not for experienced autocrossers or high performance drivers hoping for some additional "seat time" or practice.

The Peachtree Chapter of the BMWCCA will be conducting our Car Control School on April 13th and 14th. Our classroom session will be the evening of April 13th, the driving portion of the car control school will be on Saturday the 14th.

I'll be attending. Unfortunately, I won't make the Driver Development Program on March 30th or the Novice School on April 21st because I will be out of town, so I definitely want to get in on this. Any takers?

Bonus -- There is an AutoX following the school on Sunday, April 15th. Hope to see some of you there. :coolugh:

I guess you can go in any car, even though it's a BMW thing?
Not sure my X5 would be all that fun on a skid pan, so the subaru would be preferable :)

You use your car and it doesn't matter if it's not a BMW. As long as it passes tech, you're good to go.

It's really a pretty good school. They teach you a pretty good bit about the basics of auto-cross and car control. BMW auto-crosses are typically a little more laid back than ARSCCA and you typically get more runs. If you haven't paid for the school yet, I'd recommend that you look into being joining the club as a member. The cost of the membership might be outweighed by the price change for events.

You can definitely run any car there, but the field will be far more BMWs and Minis as one would expect. Go out, have fun, and wear sunscreen if it won't rain.

What's involved in the Tech Inspection?
I know for bike track days etc you have have things safety wired, speedos taped up, mirrors removed/taped etc.
Never done a car track day. How bad are these types of things on your tyres, brakes, etc?

Typical things I would look for when working tech:

Tires inflated and no cording visable
Brake pedal (ie if there is pressure)
Battery is tied or bolted down
No "free floating" crap in the car or trunk
No fluids leaking in the engine bay

If your car can pass these basic checks you should be fine.

FYI you don't have to own a BMW to join BMW CCA (unlike Porsche club). It's only $40 or so to join and a family member can join for an additional $5 more (yearly).

I wouldn't really call this a track day. This, if I'm thinking of the right school, is an autocross school. Your brakes should be able to handle it, top speeds max out around 50ish mph (depending on course setup and car). The exercises will stress your car, nothing worse than a good test drive might. I'd expect the majority of the "bad" will be focused on the tires. Unless you count the driver. Wear sunscreen if it's not going to rain, I can't say it enough. Take water or something else to drink and you'll have a good time.

I'm not sure on the number of participants registered but it was limited to 30. Did you register? If not, unfortunately, registration closed on April 8th.
