Let's just say there is a national level scca autoxer that had a "change" and then decided to compete in ladies championships... there was a protest over it...

eh, I has hoping for something like we'd get to be able to tear up a new wrx or even sti at this challenge. Not that we'd have to win it before we reap the benefits. All you damn regular auto-xers screwing over everyone else.

Haha that's cool, really you deserve to win it. Basically all I'm saying is that the surprise is really only going to affect a few pretty much pre-selected people. Just not that great of a surprise for the rest of us :)

But seriously, congrats none the less. And I expect a full write up on the STi event and pictures. :)

P.S. PAX?.

PAX theroretical driver index.... ie handicap

If I run 50.0 sec on a course my pax time is (0.838x50.0) 41.9sec for an A Stock STi
Then Will runs a 51.6 in his STX WRX his pax time is (0.808x51.6) 41.7 secs
Then Clay runs a 50.9 sec in his STU STi his pax time is (0.821x50.9) 41.8 secs

Will would come in first, Clay in second and me in third even though my "raw" time was the fastest. It's compiled off of national tour/national championship data from the best drivers in the country and is adjusted every year.

Subaru seems to be following a similar setup to Chevy's Rev it up program only you are driving your own car for the subaru challenge.

Oh well damn, I didn't realize that it was some sort of handicap. I retract my previous statement. I'm a jackass...

the sti might have shifter paddles??!!

so i was reading car and driver today and saw a whats article new for the wrx. they also had a quick mention that the sti will have shifter paddles as an option. anyone else hear anything about this. lamo in my opinion.

"lamo" because of...?

21. New Evo is supposed to have paddles right? Makes a little sense that the STi might carry it as an option as well..... don't know that it'd be worth it though.....

rumor has it that it is supposed to be a DSG type transmission. so, it might be worth it, from what have been reading about the DSG. i still haven't tried one out yet though, so it could all be hype....

Should be interesting to see what they would be like

my m3 has paddle shifters.. its amazing.. the new evo and sti are supposed to have an SMG like tranny in them.... all an SMG is .. is a manual tranny with a computer to shift and apply the clutch ( yes it still has a clutch)
so if the new sti comes with it.. its great news.. those things can change faster than any driver..

the DSG system is the one that Volkswagen uses...like i said i haven't tried it but it is supposed to be better than a regular automatic that has paddle style shifters.
i guess it is time to start some research on it....

an auto with paddle shifters is DIFFFERENT just because a transmission has paddle shifters doesn't mean its an auto.

This isn't going to be like a "manu-matic' tranny. It will not shift for you if you hit redline (or at least it better not). It will however ensure a correct shift, and a FASTER shift EVERY time... Well worth it, if you've ever done any road racing...

yeah i love my smg is great not having to use your foot for the clutch.. it senses how fast gears should be changed. depending how on hard the accelerator is depressed.. and its got a auto mode..

I had read something a while back that there was going to be an automatic STI, DSG paddle shift tranny would be nice. It'll be a lot more consistent for the hardcore drag racers and easier for those that dont like to drive with both feet.

If the STi has paddle shifting...that means it'll be a 5DAT (5 spd auto) with paddles like the 08 legacy gt's.

the DSG technology is not something subaru is just going to up and come out with. it's not in their patterns of technology.

however, if they do come out with it...dont expect it too much from it.

Is it still a torque converter automatic just with paddle shifters? There's definately something to be said for high-stall torque converters and automatics. It wont be near as sporty, nor allow for as much control but for drag racing it'll allow for dead consistent launches.

32. WJM

the 5DAT is just an automatic trans just like all the others....some of the 08 legacys have the nifty paddles (GT's only IIRC). TQ converter and all. LOW stall tho.

but what I was saying was...if subaru came out with a similar to DSG setup...dont expect too much from it. I seriously doubt they are considering it.

but...since they are trying to be more 'main stream'...in order to compete with the evo and gti, they need it, so they might rush it and cut corners. Like they did with the WHOLE 2008 'impreza'.

How dumb, part of the fun of driving this car is shifting it.

I do not drag, ill track and auto a few times a year. Yes, I sit in shitty stop and go downtown atl traffic. Never once have I wanted an automatic and I sure as shit don't wamt one in my sti. Sure its 'cool' but seriously, what a waste - take the r and d money from that and put it somewhere it counts...its worthless mainstream bling.

If it comes with a DSG tranny Ill be one of the first in line to get mine. The DSG trannys are bad ass. Someone(I'm not allowed to say who) shared that they tested an STI with a sequential box around a certain road course and it was worth over 4 seconds....4 seconds is a long time.

But the clutch is such an important part of your driving skill! Any fool can use paddles... only someone with a loud exhaust knows how important it is not to screw up double clutch downshifts!!! Im MT all the way!

37. nsvwrx

nsvwrx Active Member

a good smg.. dsg will take care of allthat ... its simply the better option for speed and reliability... (its got a clutch...most people dont seem to grasp that concept)

38. Berzerklo

Berzerklo Active Member

No, I get it. I am not saying its a bad system, I am just saying its not for me. Even if it has a clutch it loses something having a computer shift for you. I just personally like using my left foot for something.

39. monk

monk The Kitchen Ninja!!!!

if this is a true semiauto tranny with double clutch setup, this will be a lot closer to the wrc setup. i think subaru was actually one of the first to start using this setup (according to them) on their wrc cars. it will be FAST and controlable, which is what matters.

but if they're just doing a mcfriendly version of it, then it will probably suck donkey nuts and further neuter the sti.

In competition I could see the DSG as something great....less concentration on driving techniques and more on actual driving

They didnt rush that.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that transmission.

I have no idea what I'll be driving in January other than what subaru has described as a "factory prepared 08 STi".... no idea if it will have the standard 6MT or whatever special thing they maybe planning to put on the new STi
