I have information on changing a timing belt on a 2003 WRX 2.0, but have ran into a stumbling block. They speak of several tools that are required to change the belt safely, but I have had no luck locating these tools. I have called local auto parts stores and they say call Sears or Snap On etc...but so far noone has the parts. The part numbers listed below I got from a service procedure from The End Wrench which gave details on the procedure and included the tools neccessary. I checked with my local Subaru dealer and they say the part numbers do not show up???
The tools are ST-499977100 Crank Shaft Pully Wrench, Crank Shaft Socket ST-499987500, there are also two locking tools, one for the right & one for the left camshaft sprockets, which I do not have a part number for (they keep the sprockets together, so they want turn causing damage to the valves).

Are these four tools neccessary? Does anyone have a good site I can go to so I may down load PDF files N/C? I would like the best details on performing the timing belt replacement.

   ...looking for answers

    Thank you,

you need a credit card so you can take it to the Subie dealer and have it done right

In all serriousness, I am a DIY guy but some things you're better off paying someone else to do. It is not impossible for a DIY job, but it takes some skill, experience and the right tools.

Dude, those tools are ass expensive.

I own every single special tool for doing the timing belts on SUBARUs...why? I do them every day. THey have paid for them selves.

Also, I've seen independent shops with experienced/good techs doing t-belt jobs on the DOHC engines...90% of the time they get towed into a dealer all jacked up, sometimes with bent valves.

Where in TN are you? If you want JUST the timing belt done (no waterpump/seals/etc...then I can do the job for right at $450 thru the dealership here, parts included.

Otherwise you are looking at $375 parts included for me to do it on the side, you'd still have to drive to me tho. $500 gets me to your HEATED garage on a weekend.

Seals, waterpump etc are obviously extra.

I HIGHLY recommend doing the seals, waterpump, thermostat and gasket, and the timing belt tensioner. Thats about $350 in additional parts. But, you wont have a worry for another 105k miles.

WJM, I am interested in maybe getting you over to work your magic...
I live south of Nashville TN and although I have not spent much time locating Mt. Airy N.C. I could not find Mt.Airy on the Map Point program I have, so I'm not sure of the distance for you. I found Mt. Airy Airport in North Carolina, which is North of Winston Salem. Let me know what you think about making a filed trip to middle TN.
I will be in Dallas this week-end, but maybe in the next week or the one after we can make this happen?

I want this job done right & yes, I will want to do seals, waterpump, thermostat, gasket, and the timing belt tensioner. I have already purchased a Cool Thermo thermostat from Zero Sports, a Super Kevlar II timing belt, but I will need to get the other parts you recommended.

Thanks for the reply and I look forward to your response...I realize Middle TN may be too far for you to travel to my garage, but I may be able to make arrangements to do this over in East TN at a friends.

I didn't think it was that hard actually doing the work. What went wrong for me was a idler bolt broke. I dunno why, I tightened it to 30 lb/ft. I would've taken it to SOG, but it was quoted on the board at about $590 + tax I think. That may not be much to some of you guys, but I've been so fucked financially and everything this year that it was alot to swallow when I can figure it out and go by the book myself. If I would've known you would've done it for $375 on the side I would've paid you.

lsnaple: At the time I didnt know when I was moving...and it would not have worked out anyhow which is why I did not offer. Otherwise, I would have.

It's cool man, I'm not upset at all about it. Everybody has their own schedule which is why I ended up doing it myself, my ase certified uncle was too busy bullshitting my time that I said f*ck it I'll do it myself.
