Future Suby plans.....

  1. So I've been pretty bummed about selling the STi last October..... fiance needed a more reliable, fuel efficient vehicle as she's going back to school for another degree, so I made the big boy decision and traded in the STi (cuz it costs lots of money and sits in the garage for a week or two at a time) for a Scion xD..... fun to drive this thing is not, but it serves it's purpose, looks kinda cool, and gets killer gas mileage.....

So jokingly I came across this ad (which, except for the wheels, looks exactly like my 1st Subaru) and presented it to her and said "Road trip!"
    http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1423561

To my surprise she responded, "if that's what you really want, we'll get it." :D Amazing because we've been having to hoard money away for the upcoming wedding and honeymoon, now T-minus 65 days and counting..... finally she says that she will do anything to keep me from bitching about not having a car to tinker with..... well I'll take what I can get :bigthumb:

Paying $6500 for it, only downside is that the guy's already parted a little bit of it out, to include the front lip, rear spats, and the exhaust stuff..... but it still has the coilovers, which I must admit I'm kinda split on..... I've always been a strut-and-spring kinda guy, never had much use for coilovers, but I guess since they're on there already I can find something to do with them.....

Anyhow, this whole long-ass post was to let you guys know that hopefully in the next two weeks, as long as the car isn't bleeding from the headgasket or anything, I will again be a Subaru owner, for the 5th time..... :wavey:

I've been eyeballing that one for a while...but, SRP is not my color.

  8. I don't particularly fancy it (much rather have RBP or maybe silverthorn), but my 1st RS was SRP so I'm just claiming nostalgia :)

About time someone picks up that car!! I was trying to trade him straight up for my suspension but since he is in Florida, and I'm here, it couldn't work. (we both drive them daily...)

So, if you get it and want to trade, I'll trade you my Ver5 struts, P1 Springs, and groupN rear tophat and cusco camber plate for the front, let me know! :bigthumb:

Beautiful car. Spats can be replaced cheap. Will he go any lower with the other parts gone?

Congrats! I nearly got that instead of the Miata but decided to branch out to something else instead of getting another RS. It was also a heck of a long way to travel in case it wasn't kosher!

Congrats, hope to see some new pics soon!

Wow he lives in my home town Im might be heading down there soon we could make a road trip out of it if you interested!

  21. Nope, $6500 was it..... but that's still a fair price for the car, most other RS's I looked at were anywhere from $7,000 for a stock-ish car, up to $12,000+ for a swapped one.....

Matt, I'll let you know about the suspension..... I don't think I'm hardcore enough to need coilovers, but if I end up needing to get something else I'll hit you up

Nice car and one day I will have one but not for that price. Patience is what you MUST have to find a nice one for cheap. Watch out for the headgasket at that mileage. Good luck and glad you are getting back into a Suby!

    Awesome!

The MY99, MY00and MY01 RSes weren't as bad with the headgaskets as the 98 DOHC motors were. Those were the headgasket nightmares!!

  25. The headgasket is something I'll have to keep an eye on..... but like just about any other GC8 owner I'll be looking at doing a swap on down the road..... no time soon though, so I hope it holds up..... :sx:

Obviously awesome woman and secondly awesome car...Congrats Dude

  28. She rocks, I'll tell you what..... she disapproves of my "spend money on the car" hobby, but she sure did like driving my STi..... I almost had her talked into getting a used WRX before she chose gas mileage over performance and went with the Scion.....

Anyhow, working tonight till 2am, then it's up at the crack of dawn tomorrow for the drive to FL..... I'll post some pics as soon as I get back..... :D

Oh, and if anyone's interested in a 2001 Ford ZX2, 5sp, 88k mi, decent condition (her old car), we're probably gonna be selling that soon since neither of us drive it much anymore.....

    Congratz again

  30. Woo hoo, the car made it back in one piece! Couple of little details that need attention, but for the most part it's good to go..... and all-season tires don't mix with uber-stiff coilovers..... I'll post some pics as soon as I get it cleaned up, but it honestly looks just like any other GC8 out there.....

Umm...ya. Put some RE070/RE01R/Azeniz on there or some other 'summer' performance tire....problem solved!

  32. But it won't stop the bloody bouncing..... I'm gonna try some good tires with a little lower aspect ratio (50 instead of 55) and that should help just a bit..... man, on surface streets it was fine, but it was kinda like riding a giant pogo stick down the interstate..... I wished I hadn't eaten before I left for home.....

General consensus seems to be that the springs are a little stiff for the dampers when you try to soften it up a bit, and of course they're more "budget" coilovers so there are some tradeoffs..... I'm gonna tinker with them a bit and see if I can't find some middle ground..... glad it's not a daily driver!

You're using Megans? Try 20/24 settings. From the softest. That seems to be the most unsprung setup.

You are going to need 45's.

What's happening is the car is bouncing on the tires.

My Outback on the Megans, with RE070's or other stiff sidewall tires, it rides great no matter what. Put 15's on it with 60 or 70 sidewall...forget it, bouncy city.

    Tyres manq!

  40. You think 45's will work ok on the stock wheels? I really wanted to avoid having to get new wheels..... a 205/45-16 is like an inch and a half smaller than stock..... Falken doesn't make the RT615 in any useful 16" sizes and the RE070 only comes in 17"..... Toyo has their new-ish T1R in a whole mess of 16" fitments, I may give that a shot and see how it works out.....

I still need to tinker with the coilovers though..... the seller told me he wasn't really sure on how to adjust them properly, and it looks like he just lowered the car down as far as it would go..... looks badass, but it could stand to be properly set up.....

    225/45/16 Hankook Ventus RS-2 Z212.

It has a really soft sidewall tho...however, its overall grip is awesome and on coilover equipped cars, as long as you run 40~50psi in them, they dont bounce around.

As for the setup...make sure it has proper spring preload. The Megans have preload and ride height adjustments separate.

On both the WRX and Outback, I have the dampers set to 16. Rides great.

  43. I hadn't even thought about that tire, I may give that a shot..... it won't bubble out that bad on the 7" wheel I guess?

  44. WJM

No. I've seen lots of 225's on 7" 2.5 RS rims w/out issue.

  45. Outstanding, thanks for the advice!

Tis true....I was running a 225/45-16 on my RS wheels with NO issue...they rode perfect and looked GREAT on the car!

  49. Ok, quick update to bring this thread back..... tires should be on their way shortly, thanks for everyone's advice..... assuming everything goes well this summer I'll be able to get started on a swap maybe by the end of the year :sx: I'll get a journal started when I begin collecting parts :)
