So I've been lurking here and there and was wondering could anyone tell me the pro's and con's of the wagons ( 02-04 ) ? I'm looking at the WRX one - and why a wagon? To prevent anyone from trying to egg me on, cargo room, its a wagon, cheaper insurance, and cheaper price ( generally )
I did it more for cargo room than anything. Its nice to quickly throw down the back seats and load something big in the back. Plus they just look better!
I did it for the cargo too. I've hauled bikes, guitars/amps/drums, lumber, dog, tires and a bunch of other crap with no problems. And I just like hatch back type cars. Had a HB Civic Si before this. But, as far as I know, insurance is the same.
Cons: smaller stock rear sway bar narrower track ~80lbs heaver hard to find good aftermarket struts/springs More chassis flex (needs rear strut bar) Ricers ignore you Pros: 1" more headroom in the driver's seat folding rear seats, lots of cargo room Comes with roof rails for if you're an out doorsy type same performance as sedan better looking IMO. $500 less MSRP 50:50 weight distribution Rarer to see modded wagons Ricers ignore you Cops ignore you Soccer moms want you and soccer dads want your car
What gtscoob said is true, and I've only been toyed with by heavy hitters like vettes. I think ppl look at you more maturely with a wagon and you still receive all of the compliments for driving a wrx. You wouldn't happen to be the guy at Aia that left a note on my window (blue/gold wrx wagon)
Hmm, alright. Any known issues per say with the wagons ( or WRX's in general to look out for? ) Also, there's an almost 100% chance I wouldn't be modding the car much at all. At most, a BOV, hardpipes, MAYBE a front strut bar. But it would be a daily driver. I have a 1987 Mitsubishi Starion to suck all my money up
The only real problems are the tranny in the 02-03 is weak but if you arent planning on modding then you should be fine.
Hmm, I might get a recirculated system and then just unhook the hose at times? I personally would just hate of any risk or chance of having the turkey gobble sound, which at stock boost, or even turned up somewhat probably wouldn't occur. It's a pain though to find a relatively stock wagon.
I wanted to find a wagon when I was looking for my car. They are hard to find, and they don't have the sexy bulges in the rear that the sedans have. I would like to have the versatility that the wagon offers, but I could not pass up the car I bought. If you like WRX wagons, look into Saab 92-X Aeros. They are the same car with different sheet metal and I think the Saabs look better!
GTScoob basically summed it up - Berzerklo is added the only thing I could think he missed, and that's the lack of fender flares on the wagon. But I hear that the 80lbs is in the right space evening out the weight ratio front to back. As far as the Saabaru's go (the 92X), they definitely are a good looking car but the greatness came in the fact that they were eligible for the GM employee discount back in '04-'05 - but now they sell for more than a comparable WRX because of the name... ::sigh:: As a daily driver, its certainly got more utility potential, but has all the fun any WRX has. Plus you can do crazy things like this: (any excuse to photowhore out my wagon )
umm, all those items are unnecessary and really add nothing and in the case of the BOV create more problems than they are worth. Unless your pushing some power above stock. Still wagons are fun! That extra 80 pounds helps the rear rotate more. Also means a lot of people ignore you.
Bov's create problems on WRX's? Odd, on my other turbocharged car ( the Starion ) it tends to fix problems
yeah BOV's REALLY cause ALOT of problems in wrxs! the BPV thats in the car already does exactly what the car needs. .. first rule of modding.. if it works for the power you want to make.. dont replace it.
I have a bit, but nothing crazy. Haven't been more than a mile out - just some quick jaunts down the beach, in a bay, or out to some barrier islands. I mostly do rivers (flatwater) and enjoy lazy paddles/camping trips. /threadjackX2
Looks like everyone hit on the BOV and hardpipes already, but just wanted to also comment that the front strut bar doesn't make a whole lot of difference. The strut mounts are already very close to the firewall and thus a bar really doesn't add that much rigidity. Haha, 0 for 3. Subarus seem to respond differently to certain mods that a lot of other cars out there. You'll get the hang of it.
I want to say sedans ftw, but I almost feel like it's racism towards the wagons due to us being the majority
Although the front strut bars are pretty useless, a rear strut bar does make a good difference on the wagons so I would recommend that. Oh, and I perfer the Saab too.
Not yet. I'm one of those guys who bides his time to find exactly what he wants and not just rush in for the cheapest one available :squint: as tempting as its been. Plus there are some other contenders I'm looking at for a daily, such as the Baja, and VW GTi. Back to the wagon, it's also a bit of a pain to find a relatively unmodded one for a decent price...
Rear strut bar questions: 1. How hard is the install? Do you have to unbolt the top of the strut? 2. Do they unhook if you have something big to put in? 3. Any brand recommendations?
Wagons are the best. When you mod, and you will, it just makes it a much better sleeper. +1 on the Saabaru.
i got my wagon for less then the guy wanted because he was moving... it was completely stock an major parts replaced at 100k all records for service and i saw it sitting in a yard 4 sale ..... plus i think theres one n town i saw 4sale ill go tomorrow and look and let u know the details........................ plus i have to agree with the afore mentioned things ricers ignore u or laugh and then u get to hand them there ass and then get the last laugh and cops either ignore u or stop u and ask about the car(which has happened to me more then once)....ive also slept in my car on hiking and fishing trips....... plus u can haul alot of stuff (and it has its love-ly benefits if u get what im saying lol)
Not sure if this one is still for sale or not, but worth a call. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/556301318.html
If The Sti Would Have Never Came To The Us, I Would Be Driving A Wagon OR A FORRESTER! I Love Them! I Just Got The Sti For The Performance Since I Live In The Mountains.
