not sure if this is in the right place but i was wondering if anyone had any input on replacing the stock wrx steering wheel with something smaller. i'm also looking to add a quick disconnect. any advise would help.
Not to my knowledge, this is why I suggested the alcantara or suede OEM wheels -- its the only balance of race and oem safety that exists out there as far as I know. As for wheels, NRG's seems to be a popular one.
Stock is a MOMO steering wheel. You can't go wrong with that. Not many OEM wheels are nice or made by an aftermarket manufacturer. Stick with stock on this one and protect your melon. Or start welding your cage, fixing a race seat, and wear a helmet every time you daily drive. If it is quicker steering response you are looking for with a smaller wheel, then just get some stiffer suspension, i.e. big sway bars.
I have a Momo Race steering wheel on my car with a JDM quick release. I love. Just stay away from any swede steering wheel if you drive the car a lot and have sweaty hands.....it will clump and mat up....my first Momo one did that and I just upgraded to a leather Momo. Also my first Momo was a 330mm.....it blocked the stock cluster bad. My new one is a 350mm and it's much much better.
You could also consider a new steering column or steering rack. That would really change up the "lack of go kart" feeling.
Whats the deal with quick release wheels anyways? You guys just F1 fanatics or something? I have seen some wheels sitting on the dash at car shows, but I didn't get it.
For me I have short arms. It's easier for me to drive my car with the steering wheel closer to my body.
If you don't break the clock spring your turn signal deletes will still work. I retained my cruise control and the airbag light is fixed with a resistor easily. Horn still works. Got my steering wheel from Evasive Motorsports (www.evasivemotorsports.com). They were a good $40 cheaper than most other places for the wheel I wanted/got. Got my Momo hub from ebay and the NRG quick release from a guy on Nasioc.
So how does the resistor help you if you are in an accident? Of course nobody thinks they'll be in an accident but somehow everyday people are.
I don't want mine and I will never own a car for myself that has one. The one in my Honda almost killed me....the doctor told me himself I was lucky and would have been better off without the airbag and I have neck pains to this day because the airbag threw my head backwards. Something about the way I have to sit in a car. Its my car and my choice. However the seat bags and the passenger bags are all still there. I've been in more accidents than most on this board. I've been in 3 accidents in 3 months prior to my Suby hence my nickname at work....Crash Collins. The worst accident was when I flipped the Talon I had and slammed into a pole.....no airbag from the factory in that car. If I'm meant to die and it's my time to go then it's my time. I ALWAYS wear my seatbelts though.
Yeah Quick Release Means You Can Take It Off And Lay It On Your Dash At Car Shows, Lol. Subaru's Come With A Lil Bar In The Front Of The Seat That Allows People With Short Arms To Get Closer To The Steering Wheel. Not The Wheel Get Closer To Them.
Smart ass comments not welcome. I have short arms for my long legs. If you don't like aftermarket steering wheels then don't get one. If you can't answer the original poster's questions then just shut up please. This isn't Nasioc.
Just admit it, you want a different steering wheel so you can do this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BELCUjDW68
Heh... that vid was pretty funny. I'm not going to go into airbags at all, but basically will say, if a person decides to remove a safety device, that is their business and the "what will you do in an accident" posts have no business in a technical post whatsoever. Mods, the non-technical portions of this thread should be deleted. This is a technical post asking a technical question, and the propaganda-guided postings of self-appointed "Safety Nazis" have no place here.
i do thank everyone for their own thoughts about my safety and all but if i decide to remove the factor airbag that's still my own choice. thanks coolrex for the info
There is a difference....this forum is all about the safety of the general public. I'm not endangering the public by using a steering wheel that is better.....just myself. Okay I'm done fussing......it just every steering wheel thread gets shot down when people can either answer the question or shut up.
what i ment by that..is that we SUPPORT safety.. our job is to recommend safe-things but its your job to choose them..
dude, chill out. just saying that quick release stearing wheels WILL NOT get it closer to you. thats all. dont have a hessi
