I just wanted to post my real world experience with about 600 miles of driving with the Cobb economy map with my APv1 on my 02 WRX. I have been getting between 20.5-22.0 MPG on stage 1 (all else stock) in light city driving (not much stop and go). With 2 tanks on the economy map I got 22.0-22.5 MPG. I did notice a big performance difference. Besides the feel of the car, I noticed boost was max at 7-8 psi (I had heard this would be the case). Needless to say, for the very small gain, it was not worth the power loss. I am now back to stage 1.
Yeah could have told you that. The only way you'll notice a huge gain in mileage is if you take your foot off the gas. But even your 20 mpg is way Bette than the 16-18 I was getting in my stage 2 02 WRX. So consider yourself lucky. I got 26mpg 1 time when I came back from Panama city last spring break. I was following a jacked up f150 the whole time tho.
I wonder how it is that no one else on here but myself and my wife can get 32mpg out of a WRX w/stock turbo. Stock tune and otherwise (SS Stage 2). 74 mph and hit the cruise.
indeed... drafting on semis and pure highway mileage, I bet you could get an STi up to 35mpg. My coworker got a bone-stock corolla up to 48mpg by drafting semis from florida to ga.
35 is a huge stretch for an STi. I'm sure the 2.0 WRX could get to 33~34 in a CLOSE draft. A very illegal draft...
I would love to know how to get more than 30 in a STi... The best I ever got was on my way to FL when I got 23 and thought that was the shit! I have heard someone say with an ap2 and a tune got 34 on the hwy. Simply though... You pay to play
My last trip to Michigan I averaged around 26mpg, keep in mind I was not going the speed limit (except thru nazi Ohio)...
I would imagine it would involve an entire extra map that would not make much power...I have theories, but since I have no AVCS-2.5 engine to play with.........more dots..........yeah.
You would be surprised what leaning things out on the tune will do for gas mileage! There were times on the stock map (and the off the shelf cobb stage 2 for that matter) where I saw mid-high nines under boost on the wideband O2 sensor. Now I only even come close to that if I am near the top of my rpm range under boost. Since tuning it myself I have seen around 2-3 mpg increase in around town driving while pushing it. I can get over 24 around town and close to 30 on the hwy.
Shit those ratings are so far off base when it comes to regular driving. Before fiddling with the stage 2 map, I never saw over like 25 on the highway. Those old ratings are based on flat ground with a constant speed of 55 mph. They have recently changed the way those tests are done and NOW cars are suddenly getting a lot less. Take for example my fiancee's civic. It is an 07. The 08 has the exact same motor, tranny, everything but suddenly gets like 3-4 mpg less all around in 08 when compared to the 07. The reason? They changed how things are rated to be a bit more realistic.
Haven't went thru a whole tank start to finish yet following my protune, I'll update whether it helped/hurt mpg's...
Maybe it is your super special will magic...funny how her 07 got less than 35 on the highway. I don't know Will, all I can say is that for me it improved.
I've always felt pretty good about my city mileage of 22, but I have been disappointed about the lousy 24 I get on the hwy. I would be thrilled with 30 hwy.
not just you, I've averaged that several times before. Usually thats what I get on my trip to Boone, and thats not even all highway nor is it flat. So I'd say that's quite good! It really depends on your commute. Back when I commuted from Flowery Branch to Gainesville I would consistently get 22-23 mpg, didn't matter if I hauled ass or mostly went easy. Now on my commute from Dahlonega - Gainesville - Flowery Branch I'm averaging around 27mpg. Basically the wrx really prefers to spend time, like most cars, around the 40-65 mph range. Another thing I've noticed on the 2.0l's is that if your doing 80(according to your speedo) your going to get noticeably worse mileage than say going at 72 mph where your just on the edge of where most boost comes in.
I have never driven a full tank of highway miles. I would guess my 20-22 city would turn into upper 20's on the Highway.
As will has mentioned before, it really is highly dependant on the speed you cruise at. Over around 70 it kills the gas miledge quick! I will have to take some logs of cruising at various RPMS and what it does to injector duty.
I averaged 24-25 in my 04 WRX that was tuned by Doug. I averaged 25-26 in my bone stock 06 WRX. I think you guys are lead foots. That said, Out of all the RX8 guys I know I have some of the highest fuel economy as well, 19-20mpg. Most of them never see over 17mpg.
Well, the protune didn't help gas mileage... went from 19ish to 18.5 average mpg. I have been 'testing' out the tune a lot though, so who knows
Thats just sad. I dont mind getting 17mpg if I'm making decent power and having fun daily driving. I've been doing a lot of highway cruising the last 3 weeks and have been averaging 20-22mpg. Last tank I threw in some toluene and ended up averaging 25-27mpg doing the exact same driving regiment (even sportier too since I wanted to see if it made a difference), same gas station too.
The car is still fun, just a different kind of fun. The power to fuel used ratio is starting to bug me as gas prices have risen and are now staying in the $3.30-$3.50 range for premium. I want more kick for the amount of fuel being used. Trying to hold off another year(will probably be 6 months) though before I make a car change.
Ya know one thing I have wondered about is if you could do an 87 octain tune...the 30-40 cent difference in damn near the same product is killing me. It would not save a lot, but every little bit helps with prices the way they are.
The updated EPA ratings (more real world) can be found here: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm At a glance, 02 WRX 5 MT is rated at 18 city/25 hwy
