I was just curious as to whether or not anybody here has had issues with cops because of their exhausts, whether perceived or real. As in, do you get pulled over more now that you have a loud/big exhaust? If you are getting pulled over the same amount, do they ever question you about your exhaust? I just want to know if having a louder exhaust would actually get you more unwanted attention, or is driving stupid, fast, and crazily what is going to do it? Please post about your situations. Thanks! Craig
I have never had an issue because of my Exhaust. Granted my exhaust is really not loud, unless I am at WOT, but obviously, if you see a Cop up ahead, you are going to let off the gas instinctively, not push the go Pedal to the Floor as you pass him.
never been bothered by cops due to exhaust... i have been pulled over twice: once for speeding and once for tint and neither time did they say anything about exhaust
well you'll probably draw more attention to yourself. but if everything else looks kosher i wouldn't see why a copy would waste his time.
no proiblem with noise here..actually im more afraid of blowing a fireball out the tail than noise when a cop is around.
yeah when I got my speeding ticket 2 days ago, the cop didnt say anything about the exhaust, but I have a feeling that a combination of the STi wing and loud exhaust helped him pick me out of the crowd of cars speeding
I've had issues.. twice, once in Florida and once in Georiga. Orlando, FL coming home from school at 1-2am, yes it was school, ask JT. Came to a red light, stopped, it turned green, I slowly accelerated, middle of the night no hurry. I saw a cop sitting in a closed gas station, just chillin, thought nothing of it... then I saw the lights. Totally confused, I pull over, female cop walks up, to tell me my muffler is illegal. (HKS Hi-Power 50 state legal) She goes on to tell me its too loud, which makes it illegal, right at that moment two harleys go flying by downshifting to create more noise. I point them out, arguing the bikes are clearly 20-30 dBs above mine, to the point where she can barely hear me. Well she wasn't impressed, and began to ask what else I had IN the car.. basically was I carrying drugs..No, not this time. Well more arguing continued to the point that I cited two officers from Tallahassee PD, who ran dB meters on my muffler to prove it was legal soundwise, and she said they had no idea what they were doing. To make a short story, she let me go with a warning, after finding nothing to get me on. Just another bullshit pullover, to find something hot in my car. Second one pretty similiar, but in Tift county here in GA. Big time redneck cop got me for speeding, and went on to tell me the muffler was illegal. Same process, and guess what, a harley goes by me.. same arguement, but this time, I get the speeding ticket (was going 63 coming out of a 65 mph zone and into a 55 mph zone). So bascially I hate Harley Davidsons, no cat, no mufflers, and lobbing power to crush the masses. I have other horror stories of motos, and subys.. in orlando. EDIT: Never got pulled without muffler, had car year and a half i think without.
you definatly get more attention for the exhaust but i dont htink pulled over for it. I got pulled over a few weeks ago and i had taken my exhaust off and put the stock back on. I do get told to slow down alot when im not speeding and i think its just bc of the car we drive.
I've never had problems with my exhaust. I have no cats and my exhaust is pretty much straight going all the way back and is pretty freaking loud.
can you get a ticket for that? +1 for Harley noise pollution..great bikes..just super loud...which I guess is the draw? also no problems here....no cats=kinda loud..
I have a cat so it's less loud, but yea i think like others here i ge pulled over for speed and they never mention the noise. Just turn the car off when you get pulled over and most times it's cool. You could always get an electronic cut out and hit the switch if you got pulled over
I've drive by at least 5 cops a day and my exhaust is loud. No issues, but they always give me the "eye".
I have been pulled over twice for speeding. Both times I was pretty much at WOT. I have just an open downpipe..... One was 28 over and the other was 22 over. 28 Over was in Georgia and the guy didn't say anything at all about my exhuast or the fact that I didn't even have a muffler tip. Same thing with the other time, but it was in South Carolina.
Heh, I just got my exhaust installed this weekend and it's loud as hell (Blitz Nur Spec R). I've passed quite a few cops and of corse i let off when i go by but they don't even seem to care that i'm there. We have yet to see tho if thta changes in time... I feel ya about the fireballs now haha! I get a pretty loud pop occationally and at night i can see it light up the street behind me .
Phil, I am happy for ya bro...I told you that you would love the Blitz Nur Spec R.....It is an awesome sounding exhaust!!. Mark
So rather than start a new thread, I did a search and found this one...Here's my recent run in: This past Mother's Day, I was going to work and I got pulled over right off of PIB by a Duluth cop...I wasn't speeding or doing anything wrong...He said he was following me and my exhaust was "spuddering" He gave me a ticket for "excessive noise-muffler." I haven't changed my exhaust in years and never had a problem before? I have a randomtech exhaust, which is far from being excessively loud... I have no prior tickets whatsoever...no speeding..etc If my car passes emissions, can I fight this and does anyone know how much I'm looking for ticket wise (i haven't called it in yet) ? Any feedback would be super!:bowdown:
spuddering? Sounds to me like it was the WRX burble that he was thinking it was raspy? I have yet to be pulled over for my exhaust and it's pretty loud.
Pretty loud is an understatement. Ridiculously loud is more like it. PS: Got my emissions checked Friday and passed. I have a catless straight pipe all the way, and had no problems passing emissions and inspection. All they did was plug into OBD II port on dash, test pressure of the Fuel Tank and that was it. Didn't even do a visual inspection or nothing.
Yeah he followed me right out of my apartment complex, and I was running a little late for work so my car wasn't as warmed up as desired...he most likely was referring to the burble and popping it does when downshifting into second before a complete stop....from now on, if a cop is behind me I guess I will just engage the clutch instead to avoid the rumble???? I will keep you updated as to the cost of this :squint:
That burble pop is my favorite, I always downshift to hear it. I have never been pulled over in the WRX so I can't say.
I hope you win in court if you decide to go that route. Your exhaust is really not that loud unless you step on it...LOL...Good Luck Bro... Mark
Did he do a sound measurement? I am not sure how there can be a legally enforceable violation that is COMPLETELY subjective?
That was my thinking as well...there's no decibel measurement requirement that was listed within the state law that I am being charged with. There is a tape # on the ticket, so maybe there's a video of my exhaust noise that would be admissible in court?
Update: I called my ticket in and it's for $64.25 ssh::ddirty: Weird amount?? I'm just going to pay it
i have no exhaust (as of today) but i still get it pulled over all the time for window tint. :-( it is mostly 5% percent though.
