^ +1, try some subaru extra s gear oil first... see if that doesn't clear it up.

I've not been impressed with the Subaru Extra S. Motul Gear 300 FTW!

extra S should do the trick. I have one gallon left if you'd like it.

I don't understand extra S. I have it in my 2007 sti trans and it will randomly grind 4th. I flushed it and put more extra S in it. Still a very random grind (like 3 a month). Flushed that out installed Motul and 3 months I've had ZERO grinds and trust me I've tried to make it grind.

that's because it's magical. nobody knows what it is... WJM said it was created by unicorns that needed something for their slip-n-slide to candy land. :squint:

Other 07-08 trans are getting random 4th grinds.

Drive it harder and it doesnt grind.

It NEVER grinds under power. It's always the in traffic easy slow shift that grinds and is almost ALWAYS in the 3500-4000 rpm shift area. Oh well Motul seems to solve it....or at least 'mask' it.

Interesting....oh well if Subaru does anything I'm out of luck as that transmission didn't come in my car from the factory :(

I was getting the random grind thing going into 4th every once in a while. I switched to Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90 and the trans now shifts like buttah.

Yeah it is but as they say....gotta pay to play ;) The fact I can get it easily works for me since the Subaru dealership will not buy Extra S and split it and I'm not buying 5 gallons of it.

My transmission is notchy too, but I chalk that up to my kartboy. I changed my fluid with new Extra S at around 32000 miles. I didn't notice that dramatic of a difference. Personally I'm thinking of trying the Motul gear oil next time. I'm interested to see how it feels.

Other than that, I get locked out of reverse quite a bit, but according to manual and every other subaru owner I've talked to its normal.

Not to sidetrack too much, but if you get locked out of reverse, try putting some gentle pressure on the gate and let the clutch out slightly until it goes into gear. That is what you HAVE to do some times on the 18 wheelers and I tried it on a couple manual cars I drive and it works wonders on them too :)

that and you can put it in 1st and then it should slide into reverse with no issue. :)

Correct since they are on the same shaft or syncro or something fun like that.

also, i put it in 3rd, roll forward a little, and then boom, straight into reverse. works like magic every time. it's become such a habit, i do it anyways when i go into reverse.
