Too close to drivers airbag..

Discussion in 'Modifications & DIY how-to' started by droobydoobydoo, Dec 22, 2008.

  1. Ok,
Was not sure if this was the right place to put this..
My wife is 4'11" and already sat too close to the steering wheel. Now that she is 6+ months pregnant, well lets just say the problem is magnified..Not exactly sure which way to go with this.I know I can disconnect (temporarily) the airbag and was wondering about pedal extensions.Maybe someone on here has some info. or experience with something similar...??
    Thanks for your time.

I'm not completely positive, but I thought airbag deployment was based on seat position (among other things). I didn't think it would go off if the seat was too close

not sure what the vehicle is but i know that on some older vehicles if you disarm the airbag you may cause the airbag light to come on and not be able to get it off... we had an issue with this at the shop i worked at when taking a steering column out, we found out that the manufacturer recommends they be replaced after so many years and if they are disarmed or deployed after then the only way to fix it is to replace it... might want to check into it depending on age of the vehicle

The airbag will do more good than bad. dont tamper with it.

  5. Sorry, its a 2005 92x.Basically the steering wheel is just touching her belly(now that she is babified).I think that she would be hurt by the airbag.I do not think there is anything in our cars that tells the drivers airbag anything except the fact that if the car is on the airbag is on and they assume that an average sized person is in the seat.(i.e. no baby seats or small children driving)..Most(all?) manufacturers now have a sensor for the pass. side seat.

I agree. My wife is also 4'11" (though only 7wks pregnant) and also sits pretty snug against the wheel. Is yours Japanese too, lol? But I think the air bag's deployment will be better for the baby than a direct hit to the steering wheel.

  8. As a matter of fact she is. lol!!

    This is a sticky situation.

Just pull the fuse. The light will be on but will go away when you put the fuse back in. Or don't let her drive.

I have no idea but your post makes me nervous... I cringe when I see really short people sitting right up on the steering wheel like that.. Add a bun in the oven and it really seems like trouble. I'm not sure that I agree that the airbag would be better than just hitting the steering wheel. At least to seatbelt could slow you down, the airbag will explode right into the babies face. I'd research this hardcore, and be driving my girl everywhere until I get an answer. Luckily my girl is almost 5 11", so this wont be an issue come baby time...

  12. Ok for those who are reading this, my wife is now carpooling to work and I am driving her everywhere else.
Thanks for your input.Any more info. will be appreciated.
