Custom housing made for this turbo :) It does use standard T31 4 bolt flanges though.

Well, just waiting on all the piping and the fabrication will begin! I will have some more pictures up for you guys within the next week or so.

The 500 and 600 on the 2.5 liter is very obtainable. 400 to the wheels is nothing to sneeze at. 480 is getting to be a beast! For ultimate safety, I would say go with some forged pistons though. This is discussing crank hp on the 256. I'll get some new plots here soon.

Why try to re-invent the wheel? Turbo sizes and hp have been proven time and time again on subaru's.

It's not so much reinventing the wheel as making a better one...one that has a better price with solid materials and long lived performance. I would love to hear of your impressions on tuning the BW S256 turbo Doug! What has your experience been like tuning them on Subarus?

The BW turbo's work great. Its for that reason we have partnered up with BW for this years race season. BW is sponsoring our race car and we couldn't be happier. The s200 series turbo's work great in the 400-500hp range depending on which one you select. My only complaint with them is the size and weight, both are much greater than the current Garret options.

Very cool. What turbo are you planning on using for the race car?

After doing quite a bit of research on them they seemed like a great option. As for the kit. I wanted to produce a good quality kit using reliable materials and components for a reasonable price. And of course, no one is using the Borg Warner turbos in their rotated kits that I am aware of. I like trying out new options!

Have you tried fitting one of their 300 series turbos in a rotated location? They are much larger than say a gt35r, with the extended tip tech the compressor covers are almost as large as your STD GT42r. I think most companies don't run the BW turbo's because once a kit is setup for a BW turbo you can't switch easily to a Garret or turbonetics etc making upgrading down the road not so easy. Same thing goes for if you want to upgrade from a 200 series BW to a 300 Series BW. The whole kit would need to be changed. Couple that with the fact that the 200 series turbo's are about 150 bucks cheaper than a GT30r make the same power but spool about 100-200rpms later but weight 10lbs more. Now using a 300 series BW would be sick. Those will out spool and power a 35r/40r. Would be different, just don't think the gains will be anything more than what your typical 30r would do. The BW turbo's are designed to run at very high pressure ratios. Something a subaru does not do. Build a kit for the S362. Anything else would be a waste of time. http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2220363

Yes, I saw that link. The BWs256 started making more power at around 24 psi than the 30r. They showed a little slower spool on that particular motor. Below that the 30r made about the same if not a bit more. These turbos wake up at 23-24 psi where most other turbos are at the end of their efficiency range.

I wanted to get the S200 series done first...they are actually around 300-400 cheaper than the GT30r. Current plans for pricing should put these kits about $1000 cheaper than the GT30R kits on the market and make the same power. I am trying to make an obtainable kit for people first that is BIG power possible later on down the road. Plus they use the same flanges as the T3/T4 series. So you could switch turbos if you so desired....but why would you want to :)

The S300 series is next. We will offer 2 options. One is going to be quite a bit more expensive and will require substantial engine modifications to work. As I predict that those kits will be only for the limited few people (people with seriously built blocks and heads), I wanted to get the S200 series kit out first. For the twin scroll S300 series kits I am going to have to design a new twin scroll header, new twin scroll up pipe, AND all the things I have had to design for this kit. It's on the planner, but I want to launch these first.

The other option which will work with our current kit in production is the S300 single scroll. This will be available probably later next month. It uses the same kit as the S200 series. It will be slightly more expensive, but should be able to push upwards of 700 hp at the crank!!! So if someone eventually wants to go bigger with our current kit, the S300 WILL bolt in place, it just will not be twin scroll. These will only be $400-$500 more expensive than the S256 kits and will be able to put out more power than a GT35R (around a 4088R for that matter) and spool up quicker! The twin scroll will be a completely different package.

The nice part about these rotated kits for the S200 series is they will be reasonably priced, come with a lifetime guarantee on all exhaust components (not the turbo) and should work on both built motors as well as motors with stock internals, offer a little better than GT30R performance and are upgradable to GT35R power later.

Thank you for your input though Doug! So which BW turbo are you going with for the race car?

BTW if anyone has a Sti I still will be selling one of these at cost to ONE lucky Sti owner at cost. I want to have them tested on 3 motors: 2.0 liter (just for giggles), 2.5 hybrid and 2.5 Sti motor. One 08+ Sti owner would be nice as well, but will need to have the car for a week probably. Also need one test car for the S300, but it has to be BUILT!

    Updated....2 options on S300 series.

Ok updated. The S300 kit should hopefully be available within a month for the single scroll. Hopefully some time mid February. We can go smaller or larger on this kit. Price for smaller will be the same. Larger will cost a bit more. Honestly, rather than buying a downpipe, up pipe and turbo, why not just go with a kit that has all that already and is ready to go. This can work on 2.0-2.5 liter cars.

Well, the tubing came in today! Stainless in all shapes and sizes :) We hope to get started next week on these and have them available for sale in a month or so. I want to make sure they have been fully tested before they go up for sale. As we are offering the life time guarantee on the exhaust components (up pipe, down pipe) I want to make sure there are no fitment issues before we start production! That is yet another reason I wanted to have a 2.0, 2.5 hybrid and a Sti. But everything is coming together quite nicely.

Just a FYI...all the S256 turbos should be available with polished compressor housings. $100 more for polished on those. The standard kit will not be polished. The S300 series are not available polished as of yet. But I know how your guys like your shiny parts!

Looks like we may have found a test vehicle for the twin scroll set up. Details to come on that as I get them. This is for the real freaks as slowwrx would say! Much more extensive build and it won't be starting till we get the other kit out and ready for production.

I could have told you that. It is a PITA to polish them and not worth the hassle for the little amount they charge to order one that is already polished.

Well as things sometimes do, got a slight delay. The new S300 turbo had a hold up. Apparently they just finished today machining the custom housing for me. It was supposed to have been done this past Tuesday and shipped here by today. But, they are shipping it out and it should be here next week. So, things are delayed a little longer. But I have lots of shiny new parts sitting around, lol.

It's going to be something else, that is for sure...spooling faster than a 35R and more power than a 4088R from everything I have seen.

Is that just an oil cooled center section?

  43. Mike@TTR

    Mike@TTR Active Member

Yes it is an oil cooled center section. They do not offer these particular turbos any other way. With the high oil pressure of the Subarus, coolant is not a requirement. The oil is plenty capable of cooling the turbo. Most of the T3/T04 series turbos out on the market are the same way.

Going to do some plots on these maps later on today. Busy busy weekends. I will try to get them up before too long. Never did hear which version Doug was using...oh well, I am sure we will see something eventually. Also as soon as these are done I am starting work on the water to air intercooler kits. Should be something exciting and different there too!

Starting work on these kits tomorrow. We just needed our final turbo. Hoping to get out all 4 kits on all 4 motors before the end of the month. It will really depend on how long it takes to get the piping bent. Going at their pace at the bend shop to keep costs down for everyone.

Well in talking to the guy we are getting the tubing from, it is going to be another month. But we should have 2 on the streets at least by the end of the month. #3 and 4 are going to be a bit longer. But the first S200 series and S300 series should be up and running soon! Also going to get some pics to share in the next couple days :)
